Exclusive Interview with Japanese Artist Tamie Okuyama, Sotheby's Presents Her First Major Solo Exhibition in Hong Kong
讀後心得
Sotheby's is hosting the first major solo exhibition of Japanese artist Tamie Okuyama in Hong Kong. The exhibition invites viewers to explore the connection between themselves and their inner selves through the appreciation of her works. Okuyama's pieces investigate the relationship between humanity, nature, and the universe, and even at the age of 78, she remains curious about the world. Her creative inspiration comes from various sources, including Chinese landscape painting and Western classical oil painting. Recently, Okuyama has focused on the sun, showcasing her reverence for this important celestial body. The exhibition runs until March 15, 2025, at the Sotheby's Gallery in Central.

Sotheby's presents the largest solo exhibition of Japanese artist 奥山民枝 held in Hong Kong. The exhibition sincerely invites viewers to let go of themselves while gazing at the paintings, return to their true hearts, and savor the light emanating from the works.

Born in Joetsu City, Japan, 奥山民枝's works center around the connection between humanity, nature, and the universe. Although she is now 78 years old, her curiosity about the world remains strong and is reflected in her paintings. Her creative inspiration comes from diverse sources, including Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty landscapes, the works of Spanish architect Gaudí, Western classical oil painting, and the concept of natural therapy. In recent years, she often incorporates the sun into her works, expressing a profound reverence for the most important celestial body on this Earth. In the exhibition, the artist will share more behind-the-scenes stories of her creations.

The artist hopes that viewers will find inspiration in her first exhibition in Hong Kong, realizing that what are considered ordinary things in daily life actually hide many surprises and diverse possibilities. She wishes for the audience to temporarily release their everyday senses and experience their innermost selves. If her paintings can serve as a catalyst, that is what she hopes for.

This exhibition features over 90 works, including a series of new pieces titled "花千里 Hana Senri" (Super Bloom). These works are inspired by the latest microscopic studies of flowers, and the artist is fascinated by how flowers choose colors and how they communicate information.

奥山's views on nature and the universe have profoundly changed with the accumulation of life experiences. Since the age of 13, she has focused on space and physics. The debate between relativity and quantum theory has made her feel the evaporation of her self-identity. During her exploration of the universe, her interest in the search for exoplanets has grown more intense, and she feels excited about the news of new discoveries.

When discussing the themes of her paintings, 奥山 points out that the sun has become the core of her creations. She hopes to make the sun a permanent element in her work, viewing it as a part of life and expressing its significance in her creations.

Recalling her travel experiences, 奥山 remembers moments from when she was three or four years old, which ignited her desire to explore the Earth. During her wanderings, she realized the relative smallness of the Earth and began to reflect on people's concern for this precious planet.

In the late 1980s, 奥山 experienced a low point in her artistic career, but a mysterious experience reignited her passion for creation. She decided to stop overanalyzing and protecting herself, returning to the origins of her art and integrating emotional expression into her paintings, ultimately earning significant artistic awards.

For young artists, 奥山 suggests that they discard distracting thoughts, return to their inner voice, and maintain the purity and sincerity of their creative work.
