The luxury design master possesses a unique aesthetic vision for design. Throughout his forty-year design career, he has witnessed the changing definitions of "luxury" in Chinese society, shifting from a consensus on the pursuit of extravagance to the emphasis on individual taste.
Yongshan Fu's model room was established in 1985. The designer graduated from the Department of Architecture at Tamkang University in Taiwan, having been educated by architectural masters and participated in the design of several landmark buildings. Later, he founded a design studio and an original furniture brand, shifting his design focus to the interior space. He adheres to the philosophy of "art in space, life in art," skillfully utilizing artworks and decorative vocabulary to evoke the emotionality of the space, blending Eastern charm with modern design thinking.
He also serves as a lecturer at several universities and has published a number of influential works, becoming an important figure in the Chinese design community. In our interview with him, we explored how the definition of luxury has changed with social transformations.
He mentioned that his earliest design experience was in architecture, having designed large public spaces and residences, before later transitioning to interior design due to an inner calling to create spaces that are more "human-centric," fulfilling the living needs, aesthetics, and spiritual aspects of a family. At the same time, with the general increase in societal wealth, the demand for personalized residences has fueled his growth in the field of interior design. This design journey has now surpassed forty years, with his style evolving with the times, ultimately dedicated to meeting diverse client needs by integrating professionalism and artistic creation.
Regarding the definition of luxury, he stated that consumers' pursuit of luxury in the past was often characterized by "abundance" and "complexity," whereas today it has shifted towards the expression of culture, taste, and uniqueness, which is a natural outcome of social development. He believes that luxury now transitions from "the pursuit of consensus" to "the expression of individuality," utilizing art and culture to present unique lifestyles and aesthetic attitudes.
A design project he is particularly proud of currently is two model rooms and a rooftop clubhouse located in Xi'an. The project integrates the thirteen dynastic histories and the culture of the Tang Dynasty, considering its status as the starting point of the Silk Road and a global fashion center, ultimately creating three distinct yet harmoniously unified spaces, infusing elements of nature, history, global fashion, and future aspirations.
As for the secret to successful design projects, he believes it lies in the balance between the client's and designer's visions, emphasizing the importance of "adaptation to local conditions" and "holistic thinking." Outstanding design must be unified with the space, allowing architecture, gardens, landscapes, interiors, furniture, and artworks to work together to create a perfect whole.
He does not often draw inspiration from specific types of works; rather, he is inspired by the little things in daily life. The rise of AI has profoundly shocked him, as this new technology broadens the creative process, sparking more inspiration, which encourages him to maintain an open mindset and draw nourishment from life.
Looking forward to the upcoming 2023-2024 year, he believes that the application of AI will bring new possibilities to design, including more efficient tools and methods. This year, they have completed a wedding banquet hall project based on AI-assisted design, hoping to achieve breakthroughs in the practical application of AI design in the future, driving the industry towards creating more modern and artistic design outcomes.
