How did you become an interior designer? Did you have any special experiences before becoming an interior designer? Personally, it seems that I have no other remarkable experiences to share before becoming a designer. I have been interested in and sensitive to aesthetics since I was young, which led me to major in aesthetics and design during my studies – it was a natural choice, and after graduating, I immediately entered the field of interior design.
What are your design principles? Have they changed over your 45 years in design? We have always adhered to the principle: use design to solve problems rather than creating new ones. Therefore, we constantly create new textures: digital, handmade, artistic, and natural. We repeatedly rethink new integrations: the localization of China and the globalization of East and West. We actively implement new relationships: new connections, communications, and relationships between people, spaces, and nature. These principles have remained consistent and unchanged.
What does the blending of East and West mean to you? How is it presented in your works? To me, the blending of East and West is the designed space where Easterners perceive it as Western, and Westerners see it as Eastern. Mature individuals feel nostalgic, and more importantly, it should seem fashionable to young people. The concrete expression in my work is: the aesthetic of montage space. As an Easterner, my mission is to convey Eastern aesthetics, which differs from the traditional totem-style concepts of the East. Montage represents an undeniable beauty: interpreting a new Eastern humanistic sentiment with the design style of “Simple Gorgeous,” pursuing an understated yet indisputable beauty. This focuses on deeper design experiences, and through the fusion of rugged and refined materials and the harmonious pairing of calm and subtle tones, it presents a beauty of harmonious conflict. Montage is also a new digital aesthetic that showcases humanistic qualities and cultivation within spaces, applying delicate craftsmanship to design and practice an Eastern aesthetic that aligns with contemporary life. Montage connects the flow of movement and free beauty between spaces, elevating the taste of space and creating a high-quality lifestyle.
Which design projects are you most proud of in recent years? Our design projects have received profound affirmations from clients, allowing us to be supported and deeply engaged in fields such as residential, reception areas, religious spaces, and medical spaces. Design projects like “Daming Dafa” and “Heart Temple on the Rooftop” have achieved honors and recognition in international award exchanges.
Are there any secrets to achieving an outstanding interior design project? There are no secrets, only dedication. Which book, movie, or music most inspires your creative inspiration? Design requires inspiration, and it is crucial for designers to continuously draw on aesthetic nourishment. For me, movies and travel are important sources of aesthetics; any movie or travel experience can provide inspiration. I love a wide range of experiences, observing the overall aesthetics of editing, lighting, staging, and styling in films, and appreciating the architecture, streets, people, objects, and nature encountered during travels; all these can spark my creative inspiration.
Looking ahead to 2025, what are your new design or development directions? We view the slow growth and changing situations globally as an opportunity and challenge for 2025, hoping to respond flexibly and proceed steadily amid changes.
