The design successfully integrates tradition and modernity, creating a poetic living atmosphere and encouraging social interaction through open spaces, reflecting the lifestyle of local residents. Liu Jiakun has been awarded the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize, elevating his representative work—the Xicun Courtyard in Chengdu—to a focal point in the global architectural community. The design of the Xicun Courtyard breaks through the traditional urban "complex" model, adopting a layout of an outer ring with an inner void, constructed along the edges of the district, encapsulating an expansive courtyard akin to a park. Large, medium, and small bamboo forest courtyards are layered and open to the public, allowing free movement that recreates traditional living environments, evokes collective memories, and continues the leisurely lifestyle loved by local residents beneath the bamboo. This design not only provides practical living space but also cultivates a poetic dwelling atmosphere, enabling people to find a sense of belonging amid the busy urban life.

The Xicun Courtyard is referred to as a representative of the "new collective," embodying a profound understanding of urban life. The design concept does not directly adopt the prototype of traditional Chinese courtyards but is closer to the European traditional method of "surrounding street blocks," emphasizing the organic integration of architecture with the urban environment, making the Xicun Courtyard a part of the urban organism. The architect abandoned decorative facade design, opting for a basic framework, with the content filled in by businesses and residents, forming a rich and diverse "market facade." This design strategy has made it a vibrant urban complex, capable of meeting functional needs while creating rich life scenes.

Liu Jiakun has described the Xicun Courtyard as "a small Sichuan basin, a big Chengdu hot pot," a metaphor that vividly expresses its quality as a social interaction space. Surrounded by buildings on three sides, with a giant three-dimensional runway on one side, the courtyard features sports facilities and integrated landscapes, forming an open and diverse public space that encourages people to gather and communicate, cultivating a strong community atmosphere. Whether it’s the hot pot under the bamboo, the rooftop track, or the gathering place for square dancing and creative markets, the Xicun Courtyard offers residents a wealth of social scenarios, becoming a new landmark and destination for selfies in Chengdu.
