In response to the World Health Organization designating March 24 as World Tuberculosis Day each year, to enhance public awareness of tuberculosis prevention and control, and to help the public understand the treatment for latent tuberculosis, the Taitung County Health Bureau and various township health centers held a joint promotional event on the 24th titled "0324 Raise Your Hand to Screen for Tuberculosis and Say Goodbye." County residents were invited to participate in the screening and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) to work together to eliminate the threat of tuberculosis to public health. The Health Bureau also urged individuals who have had contact with tuberculosis patients to actively cooperate with health authorities in undergoing latent tuberculosis infection testing, proactively screening for early detection and treatment, thereby maintaining the health of themselves and their families.
The director of the Health Bureau stated that tuberculosis mainly spreads through the air and droplets. If symptoms such as persistent cough for more than two weeks, night sweats, or weight loss occur, one should seek medical examination as soon as possible to ensure the health of oneself and their family. Furthermore, some infected individuals may not exhibit symptoms but still harbor the tuberculosis bacteria, a condition known as "latent tuberculosis infection." Although it's not infectious at this stage, it could potentially lead to active tuberculosis in the future, making the active treatment of latent tuberculosis particularly important.
The Taitung County Health Bureau will collaborate with the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Centers for Disease Control to conduct the "324 Project - Latent Tuberculosis Infection Testing and Treatment" from March 24 to May 24 for a duration of two months. Screening will prioritize individuals who have had contact with tuberculosis cases; members of the public who have been TB contacts or are willing to participate may do so subsequently. Additionally, participants must be at least 18 years old and present a valid photo ID to verify their identity, such as an ID card, health insurance card, driver's license, etc. Foreign residents may present a residence permit or health insurance card, with the aim of early detection and treatment.
The Health Bureau pointed out that the number of slots for this activity is limited, with the central government allocating 90 slots to Taitung County. Eligible individuals can apply for screening before May 24, but if slots fill up early, applications will no longer be accepted. Participants can also take part in a central lottery event; eligible individuals may consult their local township health centers for details. Successful participants must cooperate with the blood tests for latent tuberculosis, and positive cases will be assisted by the health center in being referred to contracted medical institutions for evaluation and treatment to reduce the risk of future tuberculosis disease.
The director emphasized that the slogan "Say Goodbye" is a light-hearted and hopeful message conveying our vision of parting ways with tuberculosis, while taking action to ensure the health of ourselves and our families. For related activity information, as well as consultation hours and phone numbers of local townships, please visit the official website of the Taitung County Health Bureau. The Health Bureau once again urges the public to pay attention to their health and that of their family, proactively screening and seeking early treatment to collectively prevent the spread of tuberculosis. The public is also encouraged to participate in community chest X-ray screenings organized by local health centers to safeguard their health!
