Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital will take over the operation and management of the Kaohsiung City Datong Hospital starting from January 1, 2025, introducing Chang Gung's resources to enhance lung cancer treatment services. The new head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Professor Wang Jin-Zhou, will lead a team of experts dedicated to improving the lung cancer treatment environment in Kaohsiung City, in response to the central government's goal of "reducing cancer mortality by one third by 2030." Currently, Kaohsiung City has a high lung cancer mortality rate, with an average of 28 people dying from the disease each day. Professor Wang hopes to provide citizens with convenient treatment options through the new medical facility and promote the vision of a healthy Taiwan, strengthening community health education and medical services.
The central government proposed the vision of "reducing cancer mortality by one-third by 2030" in 2024. Under the "three arrows" plan of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, both the government and the private sector are fully committed to cancer prevention and control efforts. To align with the central goal, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital plans to take over the operational management of Kaohsiung City Datong Hospital on January 1, 2025, and will introduce resources from the Chang Gung medical system. Led by lung cancer expert Professor Wang Jin-zho, a professional team will strengthen lung cancer treatment in the internal medicine department, enhance medical resources, create a new medical base for citizens, and promote the development of cancer treatment in Kaohsiung.
Professor Wang Jin-zho stated that through the collaboration between Kaohsiung Chang Gung and Datong Hospital, he hopes to assist the Kaohsiung City Government in promoting cancer treatment efforts to achieve the vision of a "Healthy Taiwan." According to the 112-year cancer registry report, Taiwan sees an average of 28 deaths per day due to lung cancer, making this condition a significant public health issue in the country. In Kaohsiung City, 1,298 people died from lung cancer within a year, averaging two citizens lost to lung cancer every half day. This figure exceeds the national standardized mortality rate for lung cancer, indicating a pressing need for relevant treatment systems.
Professor Wang Jin-zho pointed out that although Kaohsiung Chang Gung Cancer Center has strong cancer treatment capabilities, the long travel distance prevents this advantage from being fully utilized. He mentioned that Kaohsiung's narrow terrain and the past location of professional cancer centers outside the city center have caused patients to face inconveniences during treatment, which is also a burden for caregivers and has led some patients to give up on treatment. He encountered many patients who needed an hour to return for follow-up appointments from the city center to Chang Gung Hospital, making them feel "quite exhausted," highlighting that the distance impacts patients' continued treatment.
Starting in 2025, Datong Hospital will refer to the Chang Gung medical system, respond to the expectations of the Kaohsiung City Government, and plans to establish the "Datong Hospital Cancer Medical Center," providing citizens with more precise medical services and allowing patients and their caregivers to enjoy convenient medical choices. Professor Wang Jin-zho mentioned that the future Datong Hospital will introduce the professional lung cancer team from Chang Gung Hospital for joint diagnosis and treatment, enabling patients to receive the same treatment strategies and professional services as those at Chang Gung right in their own neighborhoods, creating a better treatment environment for the citizens of Kaohsiung.
Looking ahead, Datong Hospital will follow the Kaohsiung City Government's policy of "caring for the disadvantaged and equality in medical care," assisting the Kaohsiung area in achieving the central government's goal of "reducing cancer mortality by one-third by 2030." It will also focus on the development of emergency and critical care specialties, smart medical care, cutting-edge technology, and long-term care services, as well as deepen community public health medical services. Additionally, Datong Hospital plans to hold regular public health education interactions to enhance community health awareness. Moreover, Datong Hospital will make adjustments based on past service experiences, expanding specialty outpatient services and specialized medical services while promoting the application of medical technology to meet the diverse needs of Kaohsiung citizens, enhancing overall medical efficiency and quality.
