Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital will take over the operation of the City Ta-Tung Hospital in 2025, led by lung cancer authority Professor Wang Jin-chou, to enhance lung cancer treatment and medical resources. In response to the high mortality rate of lung cancer in Kaohsiung City, Professor Wang hopes to establish a professional team to provide convenient medical services, aligning with the central government's goal of "reducing cancer mortality by one-third by 2030." In the future, Ta-Tung Hospital will focus on emergency and critical care, smart medical services, and community health improvements, expanding specialized services to meet the needs of citizens.
The central government announced in 2024 a goal of "reducing cancer mortality by one-third by 2030." Under the promotion of the Ministry of Health and Welfare's "Three Arrows" plan, both the government and the private sector are working hard to advance cancer prevention and treatment efforts. In response to this goal, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital will take over the operational management of the municipal Tatung Hospital on January 1, 2025, utilizing the resources of the Chang Gung system. Led by lung cancer expert Professor Wang Jin-Chou, a top medical team will focus on lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, enhance medical resources, establish a new medical hub for the citizens, and strengthen the development of cancer treatment in Kaohsiung.
Professor Wang Jin-Chou stated that through the collaboration between Kaohsiung Chang Gung and Tatung Hospital, he hopes to assist the Kaohsiung City Government in advancing cancer treatment, realizing the beautiful vision of a "Healthy Taiwan." According to the cancer registration report of the year 112 of the Republic of China, 28 people die from lung cancer in Taiwan each day, making lung cancer a "new national disease" that has attracted significant attention from all sectors. According to the latest statistics, the number of lung cancer deaths in Kaohsiung City reached 1,298 in a single year, equivalent to two citizens dying from lung cancer every half day, with a mortality rate higher than the national standard, making the relevant treatment system a matter of urgent attention.
Professor Wang Jin-Chou pointed out that although Kaohsiung Chang Gung cancer center has the largest cancer treatment capacity, the actual effectiveness is affected due to distance. The narrow and long terrain of Kaohsiung makes it inconvenient for patients and their families to reach professional cancer centers located outside the city center, resulting in some patients choosing to forgo treatment. In the past, many patients have reported that traveling from the city center to Chang Gung Hospital for follow-ups often takes an hour, and patients often feel "it's very hard," highlighting the significant impact of transportation distance on ongoing treatment.
Starting in 2025, Tatung Hospital, led by Professor Wang Jin-Chou, will follow the model of Chang Gung, striving to create the "Tatung Hospital Cancer Medicine Center" to provide more precise medical services for the citizens of Kaohsiung and offer patients and their caregivers more convenient options. In the future, Tatung Hospital will introduce Chang Gung's professional lung cancer team, allowing patients to receive the same treatment strategies nearby, providing a more comprehensive treatment environment for the citizens of Kaohsiung.
Looking ahead, Tatung Hospital will support the Kaohsiung City Government's policy of "Caring for the Disadvantaged, Medical Equality," helping the Kaohsiung area achieve the central government's goal of "reducing cancer mortality by one-third by 2030." It will focus on emergency and critical care, smart medical care, cutting-edge technology, and long-term care services, while also deeply engaging in community public health. Regular public education activities will be held to raise community health awareness. Additionally, Tatung Hospital will expand specialized outpatient clinics and specialty medical services based on past service experience and future development, promoting the application of medical technology to meet the diverse needs of Kaohsiung citizens and enhance overall efficiency and quality.
