Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital will take over the operation and management of the Municipal Datong Hospital in 2025, focusing on lung cancer treatment, led by lung cancer expert Professor Wang Jinzhao. The aim is to strengthen the medical resources and services of the internal medicine department. This transformation responds to the central government's goal of reducing cancer mortality rates by one-third by 2030 and aims to enhance the convenience of treatment and the quality of healthcare for Kaohsiung citizens. Professor Wang emphasized that the issue of patients abandoning treatment due to long distances will be improved, as the new hospital area will provide the same treatment system as Chang Gung, and promote the application of medical technology and community health education to increase public awareness of health.

The central government proposed the goal of "reducing cancer mortality by one third by 2030" in 2024. With the promotion of the "three arrows" plan by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, both the political sphere and the public actively participate in cancer prevention and treatment efforts. Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital announced that it will officially take over the management of the Municipal Datong Hospital's operations starting January 1, 2025, addressing the issues related to lung cancer treatment in Kaohsiung City and introducing resources from the Chang Gung medical system. As Professor Wang Jinzhu previously served as the deputy director of the Department of Internal Medicine at Chang Gung Hospital and is a lung cancer treatment expert, he will lead an excellent specialist team to strengthen lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, enhance medical resources, create a brand-new medical hub for citizens, and promote cancer treatment development in Kaohsiung.

Professor Wang Jinzhu stated that he expects the cooperation between Kaohsiung Chang Gung and Datong Hospital to contribute to the advance of cancer treatment in Kaohsiung City Government, responding to the beautiful vision of achieving a "Healthy Taiwan." According to the cancer registration report of the year 112 of the Republic of China, an average of 28 people die from lung cancer in Taiwan every day, making it an important health issue in the country. The latest statistics on lung cancer mortality show that 1,298 people died from lung cancer in Kaohsiung City within a single year, with an average of two citizens from Kaohsiung succumbing every half day; the mortality rate is higher than the national average, indicating that the related treatment system needs further attention.

Professor Wang Jinzhu pointed out that even though the Kaohsiung Chang Gung Cancer Center has the highest capacity for cancer treatment, its effectiveness is impacted by its remote location. He explained that due to Kaohsiung's long and narrow terrain, professional cancer centers are often not in the city center, which has made treatment inconvenient for patients and a burden for caregivers, leading some patients to abandon treatment. He cited examples of many patients needing to spend an hour traveling for follow-up visits, often resulting in them feeling "very distressed," reflecting the impact of travel distance on patients' continued treatment.

Starting in 2025, Kaohsiung Chang Gung will take over the operations of Datong Hospital. The new head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Professor Wang Jinzhu, emphasized that in the future, they will establish a "Cancer Medical Center" at Datong Hospital according to the standards of the Chang Gung medical system, providing precise medical services close to home for the citizens of Kaohsiung, allowing patients and their caregivers more convenient medical choices. He also stated that in the future, Datong Hospital will introduce the professional lung cancer team from Chang Gung Hospital, enabling patients to receive the same treatment strategies and professional services locally as in the Chang Gung system, thereby providing a more comprehensive treatment environment for the citizens of Kaohsiung.

Looking ahead, Datong Hospital will assist the Kaohsiung City Government in striving towards the central government's goal of "reducing cancer mortality by one third by 2030" based on the "caring for the disadvantaged and equitable healthcare" policy. It will also focus on the development of emergency and critical care specialties, smart healthcare, cutting-edge technology, and long-term care services, delve into community public health care, regularly hold public health education interactions, and aim to enhance community health awareness. Additionally, Datong Hospital will reference past service experiences and future positioning to expand specialized outpatient clinics and specialty medical services, promote the application of medical technology, meet the diverse needs of Kaohsiung citizens, and improve overall efficiency and quality.
