The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced today the second case of enterovirus infection complicated by severe illness leading to death in the country this year. The victim was a newborn male infant from the northern region who was less than 1 month old. The baby was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit in mid-February due to respiratory distress, and later exhibited multiple signs of sepsis. Unfortunately, he passed away on March 17, having been confirmed to be infected with Enterovirus Type 11. This year, there have been a total of 3 confirmed cases of enterovirus infection complicated by severe illness, with 2 of them being newborns. The number of severe cases is slightly higher than during the same period from 2021 to 2024. The CDC urges the public to be aware of early warning signs of severe enterovirus infection in newborns and young children.
