Deputy Director Ma Jing-ye stated that to ensure the hygiene and safety of food for Qingming worship, a total of 95 products were tested this time. The results of the food inspection announced today by the New Taipei City Health Bureau revealed that one sample of cilantro was found to have pesticide residue exceeding the standard. The Health Bureau has requested the removal and recall of this batch of products and has handed the case over to the health bureau of the county or city to which the supplier belongs for further handling.
The Health Bureau estimated that to ensure food safety during the Qingming Festival, which involves ancestral worship and tomb sweeping, they conducted food inspections on various food items sold by restaurants, supermarkets, and vendors in traditional markets, including spring rolls, spring roll wrappers, peanut powder, soybean products, fresh fruits and vegetables, fully vegetarian offerings, cake and pastry products, snack foods, and wet rice and noodle products.
The Deputy Director of the Health Bureau stated that a total of 95 products were sampled, among which one sample of cilantro had pesticide "Propargite" exceeding the regulatory limit. According to the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act, fines can range from NT$60,000 to NT$2 million for such violations. The Health Bureau has already ordered the products to be taken off the shelves and has transferred the case to the relevant health bureau for further processing.
The Deputy Director also pointed out that "Propargite" is classified as a fungicide that has very low toxicity to mammals and can be excreted from the human body through urine or feces. It can also be effectively removed from surfaces by running water. He urged the public to choose products with agricultural certifications or from reputable vendors when purchasing fruits and vegetables to ensure food safety.
