The New Taipei City Health Bureau conducted random inspections of sacrificial food during the Qingming Festival period, checking the hygiene and safety of 95 products. The inspection results showed that one cilantro sample had pesticide residues exceeding the standard, violating the Food Safety Law. It has been ordered to be removed from shelves and handed over to the relevant health bureau for handling. Deputy Director Ma Jing-ye urged the public to pay attention to three principles for washing fruits and vegetables and suggested choosing products with labels to reduce risks. Ching Ming Festival, as an important day for ancestor worship and tomb sweeping, has led the New Taipei City Health Bureau to conduct random inspections of seasonal foods in the catering industry, supermarkets, and traditional markets to ensure the hygiene and safety of sacrificial foods. The inspections included products such as spring rolls, spring roll skins, peanut powder, tofu products, fresh fruits and vegetables, all-vegetarian offerings, pastries, snacks, and wet rice noodles, with a total of 95 products sampled. The inspection items covered food microbiological hygiene standards, total aflatoxins, preservatives, bleaching agents, pesticide residues, dithiocarbamates, coloring agents and non-permitted coloring agents, boric acid and its salts, animal ingredients, sterilizers, sweeteners, and benzoic acid, among others.
During the tests, it was found that one sample of cilantro had pesticide "Propaconazole" exceeding the standard limit, surpassing the regulatory limit. The Health Bureau has transferred the product to the corresponding supplier's Health Bureau for follow-up processing. The deputy director stated that the Ching Ming Festival is a traditional holiday highly valued by the public, and tomb sweeping and ancestor worship are indispensable customs. This year, among the tested products, one sample of cilantro was detected with pesticide "Propaconazole" at 0.02 ppm (the regulatory limit is 0.01 ppm), which violates the relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Hygiene Management Law, therefore fines can range from NT$60,000 to NT$200 million under the law. The non-compliant products will be removed from shelves and recalled, and related processing procedures have already been initiated.
The deputy director pointed out that "Propaconazole" is classified as a low-toxicity sterilizer, which can be excreted from the human body through urine or feces and can be effectively washed off with running water. He urged the public to remember the three correct principles for washing vegetables: 1. Soaking, 2. Rinsing, 3. Cutting off. Additionally, when purchasing fruits and vegetables, it is recommended to choose products with agricultural product certification marks or from reputable vendors to reduce risk and ensure food safety. For more information on purchasing and washing fruits and vegetables, please refer to the Health Bureau’s website.
