The New Taipei City Health Bureau conducted random inspections of 95 traditional Qingming Festival foods to ensure their hygiene and safety. The inspection items included microbial standards and pesticide residues, among others. However, one sample of cilantro was found to contain excessive levels of the pesticide “Propargite” and has been taken off the shelves and transferred for processing. The Health Bureau recommends that the public properly wash fruits and vegetables and choose products with agricultural product labels to reduce risks. For more information, please refer to the Health Bureau's website.
The New Taipei City Health Bureau conducted random tests on ritual foods during the Qingming Festival to ensure their sanitary safety. This inspection targeted the food service industry, supermarkets, and vendors in traditional markets, with a total of 95 seasonal products tested, including spring rolls, spring roll wrappers, peanut powder, bean products, fresh fruits and vegetables, fully vegetarian ritual foods, cakes and pastries, snacks, and wet rice noodle products.
The inspection content included microbiological health standards in food, total aflatoxin, preservatives, bleaching agents, pesticide residues, dithiocarbamate compounds, colorants and non-permitted colorants, boric acid and its salts, animal-derived ingredients, sterilants, sweeteners, and benzoic acid. Among these, one sample of cilantro had a pesticide "Propiconazole" detected above the regulatory limit, and it has been referred to the supplier for follow-up action by the Health Bureau.
The Deputy Director of the New Taipei City Health Bureau pointed out that Qingming Festival is a traditional holiday valued by the public, and ancestor worship and tomb sweeping are important rituals. Among the 95 products tested this year, one sample of cilantro had a pesticide residue of 0.02 ppm, exceeding the limit by 0.01 ppm, which violates the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act and could face a fine ranging from over NT$60,000 to NT$20 million. The Health Bureau has requested the recall of the non-compliant product.
The Deputy Director stated that the toxicity of "Propiconazole" is relatively low for mammals and can be eliminated through urine or feces, with effective removal using running water. The public is urged to follow the three principles for properly washing fruits and vegetables: soaking, rinsing, and trimming. When purchasing, it is recommended to choose products labeled with agricultural certification or from reputable manufacturers to reduce risks and ensure food safety.
For detailed principles on selecting and washing fruits and vegetables, the public can refer to the Health Bureau's website.
