Whether sprays can be taken on a plane depends on their type and regulations. General medical or cosmetic sprays can be checked in, but they must comply with weight and volume limits. However, pepper spray is prohibited from being carried on either as carry-on or checked luggage. When taking international flights, the amount of spray carried must not exceed 100 milliliters and must be placed in a transparent plastic bag not exceeding 1 liter. If duty-free sprays exceed the volume limit, they cannot be carried on, and it is recommended to confirm with the staff before traveling.

Can sprays be taken on airplanes? There are many types of sprays available in the market, such as hairspray, dry shampoo, sunscreen spray, and some people even carry pepper spray for self-defense. So, when traveling abroad, can these sprays be carried on board or checked in? Let's find out!

According to the regulations of the Civil Aeronautics Administration of the Ministry of Transportation, most sprays that meet specific standards can be checked in or carried on. Medical supplies (including sprays) and personal care products (including sprays) that are non-radioactive, as well as Class 2.2 aerosols with no secondary hazards, can be checked in. It is important to note that these sprays must comply with the restriction of "net weight of a single item not exceeding 0.5 kilograms or net capacity not exceeding 0.5 liters," and the total amount carried by each person must not exceed 2 kilograms or 2 liters. For example, four 500 milliliter aerosol cans are permissible. Additionally, the pressure valves of the sprays must be capped or otherwise protected to prevent accidental leakage.

However, pepper spray is prohibited under any circumstances, whether checked in or carried on. The public should be particularly vigilant to avoid violations. Especially in the Hong Kong and Macau regions, gas sprays are classified as absolutely prohibited controlled items, and those caught will face prosecution by local customs.

So, can sprays be carried on airplanes? Medical supplies or personal care products made of non-radioactive materials (such as hair gel, perfume, cologne, and alcohol-containing medications) can be taken on board. According to relevant regulations, for passengers on international flights, the containers of spray items in carry-on luggage must not exceed 100 milliliters, and they must be placed in a transparent plastic zip-lock bag with a capacity of no more than 1 liter. Each passenger is only permitted to carry one resealable zip-lock bag. Sprays that do not meet these restrictions should be placed in checked luggage.

When purchasing sprays at duty-free shops, because different countries have varying restrictions on the transport of aerosols, travelers should ask the staff in advance to understand the relevant regulations. In Taiwan, if the container volume of aerosol products exceeds 100 milliliters (including duty-free items), it is also prohibited to carry them on board, so please pay special attention.
