The director of this year's Oscar-winning documentary "Your Country, My Home," Balal, was attacked by Israeli settlers in the West Bank and was briefly arrested. When members of the anti-occupation group "Jewish Non-Violent Center" arrived to film the incident, they were also attacked. Balal was released on March 25 with facial injuries and stated that he was held at a military base for up to 24 hours. He was filming settlers attacking neighbors and was assaulted after returning home to check on his family. Incidents of violence by Israeli settlers are frequent, and local police and military often do not intervene during such occurrences. Balal pointed out that one settler had attacked his home multiple times. The Israeli military, on the other hand, claimed that Palestinians were throwing stones at Israeli vehicles, which led to their arrests. Although European countries and the United States previously imposed sanctions on settlers, those policies were lifted after Trump took office.

Al-Balawi stated that he was filming the settlers attacking a neighbor's house and then returned home to check on his relatives' safety when he was also attacked.

In fact, the violent actions of Israeli settlers are not uncommon, and sometimes they even attack Palestinian community gatherings to steal livestock. Groups monitoring such incidents note that the police and military often sit by and do not intervene. Al-Balawi mentioned that one of the settlers has attacked his home multiple times. The Israeli military claims that Palestinians are throwing stones at the vehicles of Israeli citizens and attacking security forces, which is why they carried out the arrests.

Several European countries, as well as the government of former U.S. President Donald Trump, had imposed sanctions on Israeli settlers, but such policies were revoked after Trump took office.
