On the 13th of last month, an explosion occurred at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi in Taichung, resulting in 5 deaths and multiple injuries. Investigations revealed that the main gas line was shut off, but residual gas inside had not been expelled, leading to leakage and accumulation. Sparks from workers cutting the pipeline triggered the explosion. The gas supply company, Hsin Chung Natural Gas, stated that no gas leakage was detected. The report indicated that the internal gas should be professionally evacuated before construction to prevent accidents. The Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office is continuing its investigation, hoping to clarify the responsibilities for the incident as soon as possible.

It is understood that the gas explosion took place during the renovation of the counters on the 11th and 12th floors of the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Zhonggang store, resulting in 5 fatalities and multiple injuries. Construction personnel reported smelling gas and suspected that this might be due to a gas leak. However, the company responsible for providing gas insisted that they had already removed the gas meter and sealed the pipelines, and upon inspecting the natural gas pipelines within the floors, no signs of leaks or combustion were found, making the source of the gas a mystery.

Reports indicate that the police and fire departments, based on more than 12 inspection findings, discovered that the unit responsible for the internal branch lines failed to evacuate the residual gas. A leak occurred when workers damaged the branch line the day before, and after an overnight accumulation, cutting operations the next day led to sparks from tools, triggering this serious gas explosion incident. Before construction, it is usually required to have a professional unit evacuate the residual gas from the pipelines while shutting off the gas main switch to prevent accidents.

The Taichung District Prosecutor's Office stated that it has not yet received the fire investigation report, and the prosecutors have returned to the scene for further inspection, hoping to quickly restore the accident scene and clarify responsibility. The Fire Bureau indicated that the fire investigation report is expected to be submitted to the prosecutors by the end of the month.
