The Executive Yuan, in response to the United States imposing a 32% tariff on Taiwan, has launched an NT$88 billion assistance plan to mitigate the impact on industries. Premier Su Tseng-chang stated that the plan includes various measures for both industrial and agricultural sectors and will provide comprehensive support for the affected industries. These measures include financial assistance, enhancing competitiveness, and promoting exports, particularly focusing on salvaging losses in agricultural products. The Executive Yuan emphasized that it will continue negotiations with the U.S. and set up a consultation hotline to address the upcoming new tariffs.
The Financial Center reports that the 32% tariff imposed by the U.S. on Taiwan has drawn nationwide attention. With the new tariff effective from April 9, Taiwan must consider how to mitigate the impact. The Executive Yuan convened relevant ministries and, after two days of emergency meetings, held a press conference this afternoon (April 4). Premier Su Tseng-chang announced an assistance plan of NT$88 billion, which includes six major industrial measures and three major agricultural measures, aimed at fully reducing the impact on Taiwan.
Premier Su Tseng-chang stated: "We have elevated our response strategy to comprehensive preparation, striving to manage risks and expand support for industries." The plan covers nine major areas and twenty measures, with a total budget of NT$88 billion. Of this, the industrial sector will account for NT$70 billion, which includes financial support for affected industries such as electronics and steel, enhancing industry competitiveness, securing overseas orders, and tax incentives.
In terms of agriculture, due to high tariffs leading to a significant reduction in exports and imbalance in production and sales, the Executive Yuan has allocated NT$18 billion for rescue efforts. Su Tseng-chang mentioned, "Export products such as Phalaenopsis orchids, edamame, tea, and fish species like tilapia, snakehead, and bass will face the risk of a shrinking consumer market and weakened competitive advantages."
To minimize losses in impacted industries, the Executive Yuan will elevate its response strategy to comprehensive and proactive preparation, expressing dissatisfaction with the U.S. for imposing a 32% tariff on Taiwan and continuing negotiations. Executive Yuan Vice Premier Cheng Li-jen emphasized that simply calculating tax rates based on one formula cannot reflect the complementarity of trade between Taiwan and the U.S. She stated that the government will spare no effort to ensure the smooth execution of two missions, stressing that the first mission is to conduct negotiations with the U.S.
Considering Taiwan's export-oriented economic characteristics, the Executive Yuan has shown a heightened concern regarding the upcoming U.S. tariffs and will launch a consultation hotline to reduce the impact. This hotline will go live on April 8, aiming for a multi-faceted approach to mitigate the effects on Taiwan's economy.
