The Executive Yuan has launched an NT$ 88 billion assistance plan to mitigate the impact of the upcoming 32% tariff facing Taiwan, covering six major industrial measures and three major agricultural measures. Executive Yuan Premier Su Tseng-chang stated that the plan aims to expand support for the affected industries, including financial assistance, enhancing competitiveness, and securing overseas orders. He highlighted that the unreasonableness of the tariff will continue to be negotiated with the United States, and a consultation hotline will be established to respond to the forthcoming challenges.
The Financial Center reports that Taiwan is facing a challenge with a 32% tariff, a measure that has drawn national attention, especially as the tariff is set to be implemented on April 9. How will the government reduce the potential impact? To address this, the Executive Yuan held a two-day emergency meeting and held a press conference this afternoon (April 4). President 卓榮泰 announced an $88 billion assistance plan, which covers six major industrial countermeasures and three major agricultural countermeasures, aimed at fully mitigating the impact on Taiwan.
During the meeting, 卓榮泰 expressed his deep regret regarding the preparedness of the response strategy, emphasizing that measures have been timely upgraded to effectively control risks and expand support for industries, particularly in nine key areas and with 20 specific measures, with a total budget expected to reach $88 billion. Of this, $70 billion is allocated for the industrial sector, including affected industries such as electronics and steel. The plan includes financial support, enhancing industry competitiveness, securing overseas orders, and tax incentives.
Moreover, the agricultural sector is similarly affected by high tariffs, with the Executive Yuan allocating $18 billion for specialized relief. 卓榮泰 specifically mentioned that the agricultural products involved, such as orchids, edamame, tea leaves, and fishery products like tilapia, swordfish, and bass, may face the risks of market shrinkage and decreased competitive advantages.
In light of the sudden high tariffs from the United States, the Executive Yuan reiterated their unreasonableness and stated that negotiations with the U.S. will continue. Executive Yuan Vice President 鄭麗君 pointed out that calculating the tax rate using a single formula does not adequately reflect the high complementarity of trade between Taiwan and the United States. She emphasized that the government will spare no effort to undertake two important tasks, with the first being proactive negotiations with the U.S.
As Taiwan's economy is export-oriented, in response to the impact of U.S. tariffs, the Executive Yuan has also set up a consultation hotline, which is scheduled to officially launch on April 8, hoping to mitigate the impact through various measures.
