"Monster" Dwight Howard once played professional basketball in Taiwan and is well-known. According to reports, a Georgia businessman was sentenced to over 12 years in federal prison on Thursday (U.S. time) for defrauding former NBA stars Dwight Howard and Chandler Parsons out of millions of dollars.
The report states that a Manhattan jury ruled in October of last year that Calvin Darden Jr. defrauded Howard in connection with a fake scheme to acquire the WNBA team Atlanta Dream, resulting in losses of up to $7 million. Additionally, Darden was also convicted of defrauding Parsons out of $1 million related to a development plan involving NBA rookie James Wiseman.
A Manhattan federal judge on Thursday ordered the forfeiture of Darden's illegal proceeds totaling $8 million, along with several luxury items he purchased with the proceeds of the fraud. During the trial, Howard testified that Darden convinced him to invest $7 million to buy the Atlanta Dream, but in reality, it was a scam. He only realized he was not the owner of the team when he saw reports in 2021 indicating that the team had been sold to other investors.
Prosecutors pointed out that Darden also colluded with a sports agent to defraud Parsons out of $1 million, claiming the funds would be used to assist James Wiseman's professional development. Wiseman was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the second overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
