"Magic" Dwight Howard, who previously played basketball in Taiwan, has a high profile. According to a report by the Associated Press, a businessman from Georgia, Calvin Darden Jr., was sentenced to over 12 years in prison for defrauding Howard and Chandler Parsons out of millions of dollars. Darden defrauded Howard of $7 million under the pretense of purchasing the WNBA's Atlanta Dream. Additionally, he swindled Parsons out of $1 million, claiming it was for assisting NBA rookie James Wiseman's development. The judge ordered the seizure of $8 million in illegal profits from Darden and his luxury purchases. Howard testified during the trial that he only learned in 2021 that the team had been acquired by someone else.
Dwight Howard, known as "The Beast", has played basketball in Taiwan and is quite popular there. According to reports, a businessman from Georgia has been sentenced to over 12 years in federal prison for defrauding former NBA stars Dwight Howard and Chandler Parsons out of millions of dollars.
Reports indicate that a jury in Manhattan found Calvin Darden Jr. guilty in October of last year for defrauding Howard, involving a fake scheme to acquire the WNBA team Atlanta Dream, resulting in a loss of $7 million. Additionally, Darden was also found guilty of defrauding Parsons of $1 million in another scheme related to the development of then-NBA rookie James Wiseman.
A federal judge in Manhattan ordered the seizure of Darden's illegal gains of $8 million along with several luxury items purchased with the fraudulently obtained money. During the trial, Howard testified that Darden convinced him to invest $7 million under the pretense of buying the Atlanta Dream, but it was actually a scam. He only realized he was not the owner of the team when he saw an ESPN report in 2021 stating that the team had been sold to an investment group.
Prosecutors noted that Darden also defrauded Parsons of $1 million, claiming the funds would be used to assist James Wiseman's professional development. Wiseman was selected second overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 2020 NBA Draft.
