The Yamaha Ladies Open Katsuragi started its first round on April 3 at the Katsuragi Golf Club Yamana Course in Shizuoka Prefecture. Shiho Kuwaki from Okayama shot a sixty-seven on Thursday, five under par, temporarily leading the other competitors.

Shiho Kuwaki, born in 2003, has been rising to prominence in the 2024 season, achieving her first victory at the Shiseido Ladies Open at the end of June, followed by another championship at the Nitori Ladies Golf Tournament, and she won her third title on the Japan Tour at the LPGA Tour Championship Ricoh Cup in November.

In today's tournament, Shiho Kuwaki teed off from the tenth hole, made a bogey on the eleventh, but then retaliated on the twelfth hole and made her second birdie on the eighteenth hole. After the turn, she earned another birdie on the second hole and secured her fourth birdie of the day on the sixth hole. In the final stages, she hit back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, finishing the first round with six birdies and one bogey, leading the tournament solo for now.

Shiho Kuwaki stated, "My overall performance today was quite good. I created many opportunities in the first half, while making putts in the second half. Due to the rainy weather today, the greens were softer and easier to play on. If the greens dry out tomorrow, the speed will increase significantly, and the difficulty will rise, so I will handle it carefully, aiming for more birdies to maintain my lead."

Japanese amateur player Aina Fujimoto carded six birdies and two bogeys for a score of sixty-eight, tying for second place with Shuri Sakuma, Ayumi Tokunaga, and Saiki Fujita at four under par. She expressed satisfaction with her performance and looks forward to showcasing the results of her training in the upcoming competitions.
