The PGA Tour moves from the Houston Open to the Texas Open in San Antonio, attracting seventeen of the world's top fifty players to prepare for next week's Masters at Augusta. Notable competitors include Sweden’s fifth-ranked player, Viktor Hovland, as well as England’s standout Tommy Fleetwood and the popular American golfer Max Homa. Hovland has performed excellently in his first year as a professional and has shown consistent results in recent tournaments, striving for a strong performance. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler won the Texas Open last year and earned a spot at Augusta.

Right after the Houston Open, the PGA Tour has moved to the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio for the Texas Open, continuing the Texas doubleheader. Seventeen of the world's top fifty players have gathered on-site, clearly preparing for next week’s first major of the year—the Masters to be held at Augusta National Golf Club. Although the buzz surrounding this Texas Open does not focus on Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy as the Houston battle did, it still attracts many star players, including last year’s runner-up at Augusta, Sweden's Ludwig Åberg, along with Tommy Fleetwood and Max Homa, who tied for third.

The 25-year-old Åberg jumped straight to the PGA Tour rankings top through the college rankings in the summer of 2023, quickly claiming victories at the European Masters and the Island Resort Championship, earning a special selection to the Ryder Cup European team, finishing the year ranked twenty-ninth in the world. Although Åberg did not secure a win last year, his second-place finishes at Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the BMW Championship propelled him into the elite ranks in just over a year since turning professional, with a year-end ranking of fifth. In February this year, he further advanced at the Genesis Invitational. Åberg’s last appearance ended with a missed cut at the Players Championship; this week, he is the highest-ranked player at fifth in the world, having tied for fourteenth in this pre-Masters event last year, then overcoming early setbacks during his Augusta trip to ultimately lose to Scheffler by four strokes.

Speaking of England's star Fleetwood, he has only won two PGA Tour titles in the past six years and is still chasing his first win on the Tour, but his consistent performances have placed him eleventh in the world. His five second-place finishes and five third-places contribute to this ranking. In contrast, Homa has seen a sharp decline after last year's Masters, where he was ranked eighth; he has faced four consecutive missed cuts recently, dropping his ranking to seventy-eighth.

This week features two top-ten players, another being Japan's top golfer Hideki Matsuyama, who set an impressive record of thirty-five under par at the season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions but has not made the top ten since. However, he currently ranks sixth in the world, just behind Åberg, alongside other top twenty players including Keegan Bradley, Patrick Cantlay, and Maverick McNealy. Defending champion Akshay Bhatia narrowly escaped being overtaken by Danny McCarthy last year but ultimately secured victory in a playoff and earned a ticket to Augusta.
