Karato Market is located in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It takes only 5 minutes by ferry from Moji Port in Kitakyushu to reach here. The market is famous for its fugu sashimi and fresh nigiri sushi, and many visitors enjoy tasting whole boxes of sea urchin. The market is about a 3-minute walk from Karato Station and offers a variety of seafood options, especially the popular fugu and locally fresh catch. Although it is relatively quiet on weekdays, it becomes bustling with tourists on weekends and holidays. The operating hours of Karato Market are from 5:00 to 15:00 on weekdays and from 8:00 to 15:00 on holidays, making it worth a visit.

If you come to Mojiko in Kitakyushu City, I recommend taking a 5-minute boat ride to Takarabe Market to taste fugu sashimi and fresh sushi. My friends even boldly bought a whole box of sea urchin and enjoyed it with chopsticks; it was really a delightful experience. There are also many attractions in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture nearby, allowing for a full day of sightseeing!

From Shimonoseki Station, you can take the Yamaguchi Electric Railway bus to Takarabe Station, and after getting off, it's about a 3-minute walk to Takarabe Market.

You can buy tickets to Shimonoseki and Kankyo Island from the ferry terminal in Mojiko, and the boat service is very convenient.

Currently, only boat services to Shimonoseki (Takarabe) are operating, with both manual ticket machines and automatic ticket vending machines available for purchasing tickets.

  • Adult ticket price: 400 yen
  • Child ticket price: 200 yen

Historical photos of Mojiko are displayed on the boat. Just arrive 10 minutes before departure to wait, and the boat is of a moderate size, with two levels to choose from; if you want to feel the sea breeze, you can opt for the upper level.

The boat ride from Shimonoseki to Takarabe takes only 5 minutes, which is quite fast, and the seats are spacious and comfortable.

Takarabe Market is located near the port, and if the weather is good on the day, the sea view will be very beautiful, even visible from the boat.

The market is famous for its fugu cuisine, and there are many cute photo spots with fugu around, so remember to take plenty of pictures along the way.

Takarabe Market is relatively quiet on weekdays, but it attracts a large number of tourists from Friday to Sunday and on holidays, as there is a famous sushi street here. You can taste Shimonoseki's renowned fugu, sea bream, yellowtail, and other delicacies in the market, as well as see various seafood freshly caught by local fishermen.

If you visit on a weekday, you may miss the bustling crowds. The sushi street on Fridays is relatively small, but the plating of the fugu sashimi here is very beautiful.

After purchasing your favorite sushi, there are dining areas both on the first and second floors, and you can also take it outside to enjoy a meal with the beautiful view of the Kanmon Strait and the Kanmon Bridge.

There is no specific sushi shop that I particularly recommend here, as most of the sashimi sold is quite similar; just choose what you like. The freshness is high and the prices are reasonable, so you can indulge in tasting when you are here.

If you happen to visit not on a Friday, Saturday, or holiday, there is a famous conveyor belt sushi place called Kaiten Karato on the second floor that is definitely worth a try.

The address of Takarabe Market is 5-50 Karato-cho, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and the phone number is 083-231-0001. The business hours are from Monday to Saturday, 5:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and on Sunday and public holidays, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, although some shop hours may vary.
