Since its opening in 2016, Shuangyue Food Company (Qingdao Branch) has become a regular haunt for me. Despite the long lines outside due to its Michelin-starred reviews for seven consecutive years, I still can't help but want to stop by for a taste. Recently, I heard that the shop has been renovated, so I specially went to check it out. My favorite clam stew with chicken leg is still delicious, the oil rice is sweet and fragrant, and the new love-hate chili cheese noodles are refreshingly different. The overall dining atmosphere and new dishes are quite delightful. Now, Shuangyue has opened 13 branches in Taiwan, and its popularity remains strong.
The Shuangyue Food Society (Qingdao branch) in Taipei has been my favorite since it opened in 2016. Despite frequently having long lines due to receiving Michelin recognition for seven consecutive years, I still occasionally come to satisfy my cravings. Recently, I heard that the Qingdao branch was renovated, so I decided to visit.
The conclusion is: the clam stew with chicken leg made from warm-preserved imitation free-range chicken leg meat is still rich and substantial, making it something I never miss every time I visit. And the oil rice, which I love, still maintains its irresistible sweetness and sesame oil aroma, with distinct flavors from the shrimp, pork, mushrooms, and fried shallots. Additionally, this time I tried the newly tasted “Love and Hate Pepper Sesame Noodles,” where the combination of sesame sauce and pepper sauce was amazing and full of flavor. After finishing, I heard that Shuangyue has now opened 13 branches across Taiwan.
That day, I deliberately arrived early at the restaurant, but there was still a long line outside. According to friends accompanying me, Shuangyue is not only recognized by Michelin, but it also has received around 20,000 reviews on Google Maps, with a remarkably high rating of 4.8 stars.
After four months of renovations, Shuangyue has transformed both its environment and ordering process. In the new menu, I tried some new dishes, and aside from my favorite clam chicken leg stew for 220 NT dollars and fresh oysters, most items are priced below 100 NT dollars, and I ordered some braised snacks as well.
The oil rice, priced at 35 NT dollars, is also a classic item that has never increased in price since the restaurant opened. This oil rice is particularly sweet and glutinous, said to be soaked for eight hours, giving it a unique texture and a delightful taste. In terms of ingredients, everything is from Taiwan, including shrimp, pork, mushrooms, and fried shallots, and each ingredient's flavor can be felt in the mouth.
The main reason for my visit was practically to enjoy that bowl of clam stew with chicken leg. I have a particular fondness for this dish because it contains a rich amount of clams and a whole chicken leg. The milky white broth catches the eye; once tasted, first, you feel the ocean flavor from the clams, followed by the sweetness of the chicken broth, which is intoxicating, and the fresh sweetness from the lettuce gives even more flavor to the soup. I always drink at least two or three bowls, leaving me wanting more.
The imitation free-range chicken leg meat always used by Shuangyue strikes a perfect balance between tenderness and rich chewiness, which happens to be my personal preference. Coupled with the nourishing broth, it gives an explosive burst of juiciness. If feeling slightly hungry, this bowl can fill you up, enough to count as a meal.
The “Love and Hate Pepper Sesame Noodles” for 80 NT dollars is a new addition to the menu, alongside truffle mixed noodles, and the combination of sesame sauce and pepper sauce is quite enticing. This noodle dish is not only light in texture but also has a rich flavor, making it particularly suitable for those who do not like overly greasy foods. The thickness and elasticity of the noodles are also excellent.
A friend who loves oysters insisted on ordering oysters. The price of 150 NT dollars satisfied me in terms of quantity and size. Each oyster was fresh and plump, drizzled with a slightly salty sauce, making for an excellent taste.
Similarly, the “Golden Sausage with Happiness” for 80 NT dollars is also highly recommended. The portion of the sausage is very substantial, seasoned with a salty and slightly spicy flavor, and pairs excellently with bean sprouts and chives, creating a delightful variety of textures.
For an informal order, I got two plates of braised snacks for a total of 150 NT dollars. The chili sauce on the table is perfect for those who like spicy food. The standout item among them was the slightly moist tofu skin, while the texture of the rice blood cake is solid yet remains soft and glutinous, making it very delicious.
Additionally, I also tried the Shuangyue Grass Jelly Cloud Drink. This beverage is mainly made of refreshing grass jelly and organic black fungus, and I drank one bottle on the spot while taking another bottle home, which tasted even cooler and tastier after chilling in the refrigerator.
