Recently, a 73-year-old American traveler successfully passed through security checks in both countries while carrying luggage containing firearms in Japan, only to inform staff when boarding a cruise. The traveler has been arrested by Japanese police, who found a revolver and several bullets in their luggage. In response, the responsible Japanese customs stated that the case is still under investigation. The traveler explained that due to a language barrier, they were unable to report the firearm situation immediately.

Recently, a security lapse occurred at a Japanese airport. A 73-year-old American traveler managed to pass through airport security in both the United States and Japan while carrying luggage containing a firearm, successfully entering Japan for tourism. It wasn't until the following day when this tourist was preparing to board a cruise ship that he confessed to the cruise staff that he was carrying a firearm.

The traveler has since been arrested by Japanese police, and based on his confession, the police located the discarded firearm and ammunition. The Osaka Customs, responsible for the traveler's immigration inspection, stated that they could not comment further as the case is still under investigation.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred on March 22 of this year; the 73-year-old traveler departed from Honolulu Airport in Hawaii and successfully entered through Kansai Airport. However, he discovered that he had accidentally packed his self-defense firearm only after arriving at his hotel and opening his luggage to organize his belongings.

The Hyogo Prefectural Police stated that the traveler voluntarily informed the cruise staff about carrying a firearm upon boarding the cruise ship at Kobe Port on the 23rd. After responding to the report, the police found a revolver in his luggage. Therefore, the American traveler was arrested under the Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law. Additionally, the police also found three bullets in a trash can at the dock. The traveler explained that he was worried that being found with both the handgun and bullets would lead to more serious charges, which is why he chose to discard the bullets.

When questioned by the police about why he did not immediately inform the hotel staff upon discovering the firearm, the traveler said that due to a language barrier with the hotel staff, he was concerned about potential misunderstandings, and thus he delayed informing them until he needed to board the ship, at which point he shared the information with the cruise staff.

Following an initial investigation, Japanese police believe that the handgun passed inspection at both the Hawaii and Kansai airports while still in the suitcase. In response, Honolulu International Airport stated that as long as the passenger's firearm is properly packaged when passing through customs, no measures would be taken, even if the destination is a country where firearms are prohibited. Meanwhile, the Osaka Customs, responsible for luggage inspection at Kansai Airport, indicated that they could not provide further comments as the case is still under investigation.
