The Highway Bureau reported that tomorrow (the 6th), there will be 13 segments of national highways that may experience congestion. They suggest that drivers in the southern region should depart before 9 AM, while those in the central region should set off before 12 PM. Additionally, northbound users on National Highway 5 should also start their journey before 9 AM. Moreover, several traffic management measures will be implemented tomorrow to alleviate congestion.
On the third day of the Qingming Festival holiday, a surge of vehicles on the northbound highways was observed in the evening, with the traffic on National Freeway No. 5 being the most congested, as the speed from Yilan to Toucheng dropped below 20 kilometers per hour. According to the real-time road condition information provided by the Highway Bureau at 6:55 PM, multiple sections of the highway had speeds below 40 kilometers, including: National Freeway No. 1 northbound from Taipei to Yuanshan, Hsinchu to Hukou, Daya System to Taichung System, Beidou to Yuanlin, Yunlin System to Dou-Nan, as well as sections of National Freeway No. 3 from Qiedong to Hsinchu System, from Xihu Service Area to Houlung, and from Zhushan to Mingjian.
The Highway Bureau predicts that tomorrow (the 6th) will be the last day of the holiday, with 13 sections of the highway likely to become congested again, especially on northbound National Freeway No. 5 with the highest traffic volume. It is recommended that northbound users on the western highways depart from southern regions before 9 AM tomorrow, while those from central regions should leave before 12 PM; users on National Freeway No. 5 are also advised to depart before 9 AM.
According to the Highway Bureau's report, as of 5 PM, the traffic volume on the entire highway network had reached 73.9 million vehicle kilometers, and it is expected to reach 120 million vehicle kilometers today. Congested sections observed today included: southbound on National Freeway No. 1 from the Dahua System to Xizhi, northbound from Daya to Taichung System and Hsinchu System to Hukou, as well as northbound on National Freeway No. 3 from Dashan to Xibin, from Qiedong to Baoshan, and from Longtan to Yingge System. In addition, northbound on National Freeway No. 5 from Yilan to Pinglin and westbound on National Freeway No. 6 from Dongcaotun Rest Area to Wufeng System also faced congestion, while the traffic in other sections remained generally smooth.
Based on the Highway Bureau's predictions, the traffic volume for the highways tomorrow is expected to reach 111 million vehicle kilometers, approximately 1.2 times the average daily volume of 92 million vehicle kilometers for the year, with northbound traffic possibly reaching 64 million vehicle kilometers, which is 1.4 times the average daily volume. Key monitored congestion areas tomorrow will include: northbound on National Freeway No. 1 from Xiluo-Puyuan System, Nantun-Houli, and Miaoli-Hukou; northbound on National Freeway No. 3 from Zhushan-Zhongxing, Caotun-Wufeng, Longjing-Shalu, Yuanli-Houlung, Dashan-Xiangshan, and from Guanxi-Daxi; northbound on National Freeway No. 5 from Yilan to Pinglin; westbound on National Freeway No. 4 from Tanzi System to Fengshi; westbound on National Freeway No. 6 from Jiu Zheng-Wufeng System; and westbound on National Freeway No. 10 from Renwu to Zuoying end.
To alleviate traffic congestion, the Highway Bureau will implement several measures tomorrow, including: closing the northbound entrances of National Freeway No. 1 at Huwei, Puyuan System, and National Freeway No. 3 Xibin from 12 PM to 9 PM; and implementing high occupancy restrictions on the northbound entrances of National Freeway No. 5 at Suao, Luodong, Yilan, and Toucheng from 1 PM to 6 PM. Additionally, there will be a single rate adjustment, with fees suspended from 0 to 5 AM, and the shoulder, alternate routes, and ramps will be opened for control.
