Today (the 5th) marks the 50th anniversary of Chiang Kai-shek's death. The 519 Action Coalition, dedicated to promoting transitional justice, and the Koo Kuan-min Foundation have initiated the action titled "Taiwan Does Not Need a Dictator Memorial Hall." Approximately a hundred political victims and their families went to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, calling on the government to remove symbols of authoritarianism and expedite the transformation of the memorial hall. They stated that if the government does not take action, they will reiterate this demand every year.
- Demonstrators held up slogans and wore black clothing as they walked from the main entrance of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall to Freedom Plaza, strongly demanding that the government quickly eliminate this symbol of authoritarianism.
- Despite the rainy weather, the participants' fighting spirit remained undiminished. 95-year-old political victim Zhang Ze-zhou spoke on behalf of the group, recalling the 43 years of White Terror, with emotions still running high.
- Zhang Ze-zhou stated, "The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall inspires admiration, yet it hides the blood and tears of many innocent people."
On this day marking the 50th anniversary of Chiang Kai-shek's death, the 519 Action Coalition and the Koo Kuan-min Foundation put forth three demands, declaring that if the government does not take action, they will return to reiterate their demands every year. Foundation Chairwoman Wang Mei-hsiu pointed out:
- First, please close the main hall at the back within this year.
- Second, please swiftly address the transformation issue of the Chiang Kai-shek Temple.
- Finally, the government should accelerate the removal of all symbols of authoritarianism.
The event began with a performative action simulating the suffering of political prisoners, emphasizing that while history may fade, it must not be forgotten. Participants hope the government will face the issue of the dictator memorial hall in order to achieve genuine transitional justice.
