The President of the United States, Donald Trump, recently announced a new tariff policy, which will see some products from Taiwan facing tariffs as high as 32%. Former Taoyuan City Councilor Wang Haoyu stated that this is tantamount to issuing a "death penalty" for Taiwan's textile industry. He pointed out that due to the high tariffs imposed by the U.S. on small packages from China, Chinese textiles may flood the Taiwanese market, causing severe impacts on local businesses. If Chinese products engage in price competition, the survival space for Taiwan's textile industry will be further squeezed. The Executive Yuan subsequently proposed a support plan of NT$ 88 billion to address this challenge, mainly providing support to the affected industries.

He posted on social media, pointing out that the United States is imposing a 50% high tariff on small packages exported from China, making it difficult for Chinese-made textiles to enter the U.S. market. These unsold products may turn to the Taiwanese market, severely impacting the local textile industry. He warned that if the Taiwanese market is flooded with low-priced Chinese products, it would further squeeze the survival space of local businesses and could trigger a more severe industrial crisis.

He further pointed out that the new tariff policy will directly impact China's cross-border e-commerce industry, including several well-known platforms. Due to the high tariffs, these companies find it difficult to sell their products to the United States, and to avoid losses, they will have to significantly clear their inventory. In such a scenario, a large amount of Chinese-made textiles such as clothing, socks, and towels may turn to the Taiwanese market. Additionally, if Chinese e-commerce platforms like Taobao and JD.com introduce promotional measures such as "free shipping to Taiwan," it will make the survival environment of the local textile industry even more challenging. He bluntly stated that such developments are essentially a "death sentence" for Taiwan's textile industry.

At a press conference on the 4th, the Executive Yuan announced that it would launch the "Support Plan for Our Export Supply Chain" in response to the impact of U.S. tariffs. The Premier stated that the plan would cover nine major areas and twenty specific measures to assist affected industries and various sectors of society in facing challenges, with a total budget of 88 billion NTD. Among these, the industrial sector will receive 70 billion NTD in support, while agriculture will receive 18 billion NTD in subsidies. These twenty measures include providing financing and loan incentives, increased subsidies, and tax reductions. Additionally, the government will assist businesses in enhancing their export capabilities, expanding international markets, and strengthening the global competitiveness of industries. The government will pay special attention to small and medium-sized as well as traditional industries, and design corresponding support programs to mitigate the impact of tariffs.
