This morning at around 6 a.m., a Korean exchange student was attacked with a knife in Ximen District, Taipei, resulting in injuries and bleeding. However, after being sent to the hospital, there is no life-threatening danger. The police soon arrested the suspect. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an expressed anger regarding public safety and demanded increased patrols and road checks in the area to prevent similar incidents from happening again. The victim expressed disappointment with the safety in Taiwan and hoped to share their experience to raise awareness among others.
A South Korean exchange student with the surname Shen was attacked by a knife-wielding assailant in Ximen Town at around 6 a.m. today (5th), suffering injuries and bleeding at the scene. Fortunately, after being sent to the hospital for treatment, he is not in life-threatening danger. Police quickly arrived at the scene after receiving the report and arrested the suspect, a man with the surname Zhou. The mayor of Taipei expressed anger over the incident, emphasizing that the Wanhua precinct has long been inactive in maintaining public security, and instructed the precinct to strengthen patrols and road inspections during specific times and areas to increase police visibility and prevent similar incidents from occurring.
Student Shen shared the details of the incident on social media, stating that he came to Ximen Town to attend a friend's birthday party. After dinner, while preparing to take the bus back to his dormitory, he was attacked by the unfamiliar man Zhou with a knife while passing a fast-food restaurant. Shen emphasized that this was their first meeting and there was no conflict between them. After being stabbed, he was shocked and asked, "What are you doing?" Zhou then quickly escaped in a vehicle, and Shen subsequently called the police and went to the hospital for treatment.
He stated that he still cannot believe it; as an exchange student in Taiwan, he never expected to experience such a random attack in Ximen Town, a place frequented by many Koreans. He lamented that he originally thought Taiwan was a safe place with good public security, saying, "This is also the reason why I chose to study in Taiwan. I have now been living in Taiwan for ten months, but after this incident, I start to rethink this matter." He also stressed that he hopes his post does not negatively impact businesses in Ximen Town; he is just concerned that others might face similar dangers.
The mayor of Taipei pointed out that the Wanhua precinct has long failed to adjust police forces according to the characteristics of the area and must fulfill the responsibility of maintaining public security. Therefore, he issued instructions for necessary improvements. He requested that patrols and road inspections be strengthened in areas of the Ximen shopping district where disturbances often occur due to alcohol consumption in the early morning, to enhance police visibility and prevent security issues. Jiang Wan'an also specifically requested that patrols and community watch duties in Ximen Town be intensified during critical time periods and areas on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to ensure the overall security of Taipei's international tourist attractions.
