After being injured, the student was sent to the hospital for treatment and is not in life-threatening condition. The police have arrested the suspect, and Mayor Jiang Wan'an has called for increased patrols and road checks to enhance public safety. The student expressed disappointment about the safety in Taiwan and hopes to raise awareness for others through social media.
A South Korean international student with the surname Shen was attacked by an assailant wielding a machete in Ximen District around 6 a.m. today (the 5th). He sustained severe injuries but has fortunately been treated and is no longer in life-threatening condition. The police received a report and quickly rushed to the scene, arresting the suspect, a man surnamed Zhou. In response to this incident, Taipei Mayor Jiang Wan'an expressed his outrage, criticizing the Wanhua Police Station for its long-standing lack of effective measures. He instructed that patrols and inspections in specific time periods and areas need to be strengthened in the future to enhance police visibility and prevent security incidents.
The South Korean student surnamed Shen shared the details of the incident on social media. He stated that he was in Ximen District to attend a friend's birthday party. After finishing his meal, he was preparing to take a bus back to his dormitory when he was suddenly stabbed by the unfamiliar man, Zhou. The student emphasized that this was the first time he had seen the assailant and that there had been no prior conflict between them. At the time of the attack, Shen was stabbed in the back and, surprised, asked, "What are you doing?" Subsequently, Zhou fled the scene, and Shen immediately called the police and sought medical attention.
The South Korean student expressed disbelief that a random attack would occur in such a popular location as Ximen District and voiced his concerns about safety in Taiwan. He recalled that he had always believed Taiwan was a safe country, which was one of the reasons he chose to study here. Now, after living in Taiwan for ten months, he indicated that he is starting to reconsider safety issues after experiencing this incident. He also specifically emphasized that he hoped this post would not negatively impact the businesses in Ximen District, but he felt compelled to share his experience out of concern that others might encounter similar dangers.
Jiang Wan'an stated that the Wanhua Police Station has long been unable to make appropriate adjustments to policing based on the characteristics of the area, failing to effectively maintain security. He directed that patrols and inspections should be strengthened in areas and streets where alcohol-related disturbances are likely to occur in the morning in the Ximen commercial area, improving police visibility to prevent security incidents. Additionally, he demanded the formulation of specific strategies to deploy police forces for inspections in areas of security concern during weekdays, especially enhancing patrol and observational duties during key periods such as Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, to ensure the overall security of Taipei's international tourist attractions.
