Today (the 5th) marks the 50th anniversary of Chiang Kai-shek's passing. The 519 Action Alliance and the Koo Kuan-min Foundation have joined forces to launch the "Taiwan Does Not Need a Dictator Memorial Hall" initiative. Taking this opportunity, they gathered nearly a hundred political victims and their families to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, calling on the government to eliminate symbols of authoritarianism and accelerate the transformation of the Memorial Hall. They emphasized that if this matter is not addressed, they will reiterate their demands every year.
- Participants held signs, shouted slogans, and wore black clothing as they marched on foot from the main entrance of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall to Liberty Square, expressing their hope that the government will promptly remove the authoritarian symbol "Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall."
- Despite the continuous overcast and rainy weather, the participants were still in high spirits. The 95-year-old political victim and retired professor from National Taiwan University, Zhang Ze-zhou, spoke, reflecting on the 43 years of the White Terror period, with anger that was hard to conceal.
Zhang Ze-zhou stated, "Under the guise of confidentiality and anti-espionage, he massacred many innocent people. As their souls in heaven witness the reverence for the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, many do not understand that behind Taiwan stands a murderous demon."
On this significant day, the 519 Action Alliance and the Koo Kuan-min Foundation have issued a call that "Taiwan truly does not need a dictator memorial hall" and proposed three recommendations, emphasizing that if the government does not expedite its handling of the matter, they will continue to return to this place annually to reiterate their demands. The chairman of the Koo Kuan-min Foundation stated:
- First, please choose a date this year to close the building behind the main hall;
- Second, please expedite the transformation of the Chiang Kai-shek Temple;
- Third, please accelerate the government's pace in eliminating symbols of authoritarianism.
During the action, they also staged a performance simulating the suffering of political prisoners. Although history may pass, it will not be forgotten. The families hope that the government will face and address the issue of the dictator memorial hall, allowing transitional justice to be realized through concrete actions.
