He participated with Bunun tribal music and traditional indigenous clothing, hoping to raise awareness in society about respecting individuals with disabilities and diverse cultures. Li Boyi was diagnosed with severe autism at the age of one and a half, and through joint efforts with his mother, he successfully embarked on a career in art and sports. During the competition, athletes from six countries competed fiercely, and Li Boyi's achievement made him feel very proud. His coach, Julia, focuses on helping children with special needs enhance their abilities.
Renowned autism artist 李柏毅 today represented Taiwan at the "World Cup of Inclusive Duet Water Ballet," achieving an impressive second place in Rome. He specially used Bunun music and indigenous clothing for the competition, hoping society can better respect individuals with disabilities and diverse cultures.
李柏毅 is the third generation of the "Star Cafe" in Taipei, diagnosed with severe autism at the age of one and a half. Doctors in the United States and Taiwan once predicted he would be unable to integrate into society, but with the support of his mother 簡靜惠, he has created a remarkable life in the fields of painting, swimming, and music.
This morning, 李柏毅 faced competitors from six countries at the "World Cup of Inclusive Duet Water Ballet," successfully winning the runner-up position. The event was organized by the "Filippi Project" in Italy, aimed at encouraging athletes with autism and related rare diseases, and received support from the Italian government.
During the event, flags of the participating countries were hung by the pool, including a large flag of the Republic of China. After receiving the medal, 李柏毅 happily posed for photos holding the national flag.
In an interview, 簡靜惠 expressed that all the participants were very outstanding, with the first place being an athlete from Italy's Special Olympics, and other competitors from countries such as Brazil, Russia, and Spain being highly skilled professionals. Therefore, she felt very happy that 李柏毅 was able to win second place. She pointed out that 李柏毅 did not have professional training facilities, and the preparation process was extremely challenging, typically renting facilities at sports centers in Taipei, waiting in line during practice, or traveling to Taichung to train with his coach.
簡靜惠 expressed her joy over 李柏毅's growth, watching him transform from someone who couldn't swim into an excellent swimmer. She hopes that 李柏毅's performances in art, sports, and music can prove that individuals with autism can showcase their talents and help families of autistic individuals around the world gain more social respect.
李柏毅's water ballet coach, Julia, is a Russian who has lived in Taiwan for over 20 years and resides in Taichung with her husband. The water ballet association founded by Julia has specially established a "Challenge Group Athlete" program, aiming to help children with autism, Down syndrome, and visual impairments improve their physical coordination and interaction abilities through water ballet.
