The U.S. President Trump recently announced a new tariff policy, which will impose tariffs of up to 32% on certain products from Taiwan. Former Taoyuan City Councilor Wang Haoyu pointed out that this move will have a severe impact on Taiwan's textile industry and could trigger an industry crisis. He warned that unsold textiles from China may further flow into the Taiwanese market, encroaching on the survival space of local businesses. The Executive Yuan stated that it will launch a support plan worth NT$88 billion to assist affected industries in coping with the challenges.
The President of the United States recently announced the latest tariff policy, which will impact global trade, particularly imposing tariffs of up to 32% on certain products from Taiwan. A former Taoyuan city councilor directly stated that this is equivalent to handing down a "death sentence" to Taiwan's textile industry. He pointed out on social media that the U.S. is imposing a high tariff of 50% on small packages exported from China, making it difficult for Chinese-made textiles to enter the U.S. market, which might lead to unsold products shifting to Taiwan and severely impacting the local textile industry. He warned that if the Taiwanese market is flooded with low-priced Chinese products, it will further squeeze the survival space of local manufacturers, potentially triggering a more serious industrial crisis.
He further pointed out that Trump's new tariff policy will directly impact China's cross-border e-commerce industry with the U.S., including some well-known platforms. Because of the high tariffs, these operators find it difficult to sell their products in the U.S., and in order to minimize losses, they need to conduct large-scale inventory clearance. Against this backdrop, a large number of Chinese-made textiles such as clothing, socks, and towels may trend toward the Taiwanese market. At the same time, if Chinese e-commerce platforms introduce free shipping promotions targeting Taiwan, it will further worsen the survival environment for local textile industries. He emphasized that this development is almost a "death sentence" for Taiwan's textile industry.
The Executive Yuan recently held a press conference on the "Response to U.S. Tariffs: Support Plan for Our Export Supply Chain," announcing the promotion of 20 specific measures across nine major aspects to assist affected industries and various sectors of society in facing the challenges. The total budget amounts to 88 billion NTD, with the industrial sector receiving 70 billion NTD in support and agriculture receiving 18 billion NTD in subsidies. The Premier pointed out that these measures include providing financing and loan incentives, increased subsidies, and tax reductions. In addition, the government will help businesses enhance their export capabilities, expand into international markets, and strengthen the global competitiveness of the industry. Particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises and traditional industries, the government will provide special attention and formulate targeted support plans to mitigate the impact of tariffs.
