U.S. President Trump announced a 34% tariff on China, which quickly retaliated by imposing the same tariff on all U.S. imports, implementing export controls on seven types of rare earths, and placing 27 American companies under scrutiny. China also filed a lawsuit against the U.S. at the World Trade Organization, criticizing Trump's actions as bullying. Trump responded by saying China is in a panic and cited chaos on the golf course. Vietnam expressed willingness to reduce tariffs on U.S. goods to zero, and Cambodia also indicated readiness to lower tariffs on certain products, but the trade war is set to continue.
The President of the United States announced a 34% tariff on imports from mainland China, which was followed by a response from China on the evening of the 4th, applying the same 34% tariff on all goods imported from the United States. In addition to the tariff measures, Beijing also implemented countermeasures including the regulation of seven categories of rare earth exports and the listing of 27 American companies, while also filing a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization, accusing the U.S. of bullying behavior. In response to this, the U.S. expressed dissatisfaction as well, stating, "China played their cards wrong; they are panicking."
Starting from April 10 at 12:01 PM, China will impose a 34% tariff on all imported goods originating from the U.S., on top of the current applicable tariffs. Following Trump's announcement of the new tariff policy, China immediately launched a counterattack and issued several countermeasures. Additionally, China also initiated antitrust investigations against the subsidiaries of U.S. companies in China.
China has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. regarding its relevant actions under the dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization. In light of China's series of countermeasures, Trump promptly expressed his views on a social platform, pointing out that China's actions reflected their panic. His actions sparked some controversy due to the chaos caused by the tariff measures globally, as Trump was photographed playing golf at a course in Florida, leading to criticism from opponents.
Democratic leaders questioned why the President was still playing golf amid the continuous decline in the stock market. Nevertheless, some countries have yielded to the U.S., with Vietnam's General Secretary expressing hope to reduce the tariffs on U.S. goods to zero. In response to the high tariffs imposed by the U.S., Cambodia is also willing to lower the tariffs on 19 U.S. import products to 5%. However, China's lack of signs of yielding suggests that the trade war may continue to escalate.
