U.S. President Trump announced a 34% tariff on China, to which China immediately retaliated by imposing tariffs on all American goods, implementing export controls on rare earths, and monitoring 27 U.S. companies, while also filing a lawsuit against the U.S. in the World Trade Organization. Trump criticized China for panicking, while he faced scrutiny for playing golf in Florida during this period. Nevertheless, Vietnam and Cambodia expressed their willingness to reduce tariffs on the U.S., but the trade war has yet to subside.
The President of the United States has announced a 34% tariff on imports from mainland China, to which China immediately responded by imposing a similar 34% tariff on all goods imported from the United States. Furthermore, Beijing's countermeasures include regulating the export of seven categories of rare earth materials, listing 27 American enterprises, and filing a lawsuit in the World Trade Organization, criticizing Trump's actions as bullying. In response, Trump stated, "Mainland China played the wrong card, they are in a panic."
Reports indicate that effective from April 10 at 12:01 PM, a 34% tariff will be added to all imported goods originating from the United States on top of the current tariff rates. China formally launched its counterattack on the evening of the 4th, and not only that, but it also introduced several other countermeasures, including imposing export controls on seven categories of heavy rare earth-related items and listing 27 American companies, as well as initiating an antitrust investigation against DuPont's subsidiary in China.
China has filed a lawsuit against the United States under the dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organization regarding the related practices. Upon seeing China's series of countermeasures, Trump immediately posted on social media, emphasizing that China played the wrong card and pointed out that this is something they cannot bear. Despite the chaos worldwide due to tariff issues, Trump was seen leisurely preparing to play golf at a Florida course, drawing doubts from his opponents.
Trump revealed that Vietnam has already expressed a willingness to reduce tariffs on U.S. imports to zero, and some countries have also shown a willingness to compromise on the United States' high tariffs, such as Cambodia, which is willing to lower tariffs on 19 U.S. imported products to 5%. However, the United States' main trade competitors have not yielded, and the sparks of the trade war will continue to burn.
