The transportation secretary has previously referred to the New York subway system as a "cesspool," and has continuously intensified his criticism of the transportation authority and the governor, obstructing the congestion fee plan and threatening to cut federal funding due to uncontrollable subway crime rates. However, according to the police chief, there have been no murders in the subway so far this year, and the city's crime rate has reached a historic low, with data from the governor's office showing that subway crime has decreased by 22% compared to last year. The mayor also took the secretary to inspect the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, saying, "I hope the transportation secretary sees the dilapidated state of our infrastructure, including the BQE, and considers investing federal funds to support public safety programs." This trip was not announced in advance to the transportation authority. On that day, the chair of the transportation authority waited at the Brooklyn Borough Hall station, but the secretary did not show up, and the chair eventually took the subway to leave. "I hope the transportation secretary receives the correct briefings so that we can collaborate more effectively.
