After Trump announced reciprocal tariffs, leaders from various countries actively sought dialogue with the U.S. However, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te did not respond and only posted on social media. Kuomintang legislator Hsu Yu-jen criticized Lai Ching-te and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim for their lack of action, pointing out that Taiwan faces a high tariff threat of 32%, which could significantly lower its competitiveness. Hsu Yu-jen urged the government to communicate swiftly with the U.S. to lower tariffs to 10% to support industries, and recommended that Lai Ching-te hold a national affairs conference to unite various sectors in addressing this challenge.
After the US President announced the tariff policy, leaders from various countries are seeking dialogue with the US. In response, KMT legislator criticized that the US plans to impose a 32% tariff on Taiwan, yet the President has not stepped forward and can only post on social media; the Vice President is even more absurd, still asking what to put in spring rolls. The legislator pointed out that if Taiwan faces a higher tariff than its main competitors, it will completely lose its competitiveness, and Taiwanese companies will face dire situations!
The legislator stated that the high tariff policy of the Trump administration has caused global economic turmoil, with leaders of various countries communicating with the US, yet the President remains elusive, only updating on social media, while the Vice President continues to absurdly ask about the contents of spring rolls! Do they not realize that all of Taiwan is facing the challenge of a 32% tariff? The legislator noted that Japan faces tariffs lower than Taiwan, and its Prime Minister has indicated that retaliatory measures cannot be ruled out, while the Vietnamese Vice Premier directly flew to the US for negotiations, yet Taiwan's leaders do not even dare to mention the word "protest," which is truly a national misfortune for Taiwan!
Regarding the Executive Yuan's plan to propose an assistance scheme of 88 billion in two days, the legislator described this as "hollow shells" and frankly stated it is completely the wrong direction. She believes that the government's negotiations with the US are too weak, making it almost impossible to fight for significant benefits for Taiwan. The Taiwanese industry is calling for the government to communicate with the US as soon as possible, aiming to reduce the equal tariff to 10%, and at worst, it should not be higher than the levels of Japan and South Korea, the main competitors.
She emphasized that Taiwan is facing a high tariff of 32%, and businesses will endure the dual challenges of declining competitiveness and rising product costs. If this issue cannot be adequately handled, Taiwanese companies may face serious difficulties. She believes that high tariffs are like a smoke-free gunpowder war; the President should stand on the front lines, convene a national meeting, gather various leaders for talks, and also invite representatives from various industries to understand their situations in order to formulate necessary response plans as soon as possible. The Executive Yuan should promptly propose budgets and draft the laws that need to be revised, submitting them to the Legislative Yuan for review, to assist the industry in overcoming challenges.
