The People's Party caucus sent a letter to Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu, requesting to convene a caucus negotiation next Monday, and inviting Executive Yuan Premier Su Tseng-chang to present a special report at the April 8th legislative session on the impact of the United States imposing a 32% tariff. They emphasized that the government needs to conduct a rigorous assessment of this situation and propose specific response plans to reconcile cross-party consensus and mitigate the impact on industries.
The People's Party group today (5th) sent a letter to Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu, requesting to convene relevant party groups for consultations, and inviting the Executive Yuan Premier to provide a special report. According to reports, U.S. President Trump announced on April 3 that a high tariff of 32% would be imposed on Taiwan, with the policy expected to take effect on the 9th, which will have a significant impact on our nation's industries and economy. Although Premier Su Tseng-chang proposed a special budget response plan of NT$88 billion yesterday and plans to invite both sides of the Legislative Yuan to discuss this issue, the People's Party group believes further concrete actions are still needed.
In their recommendations, the People's Party group pointed out that detailed special reports on topics such as "the Lai government’s serious negotiations with the U.S. regarding the content and results," "efforts to seek tariff exemptions or trade agreements," and "comprehensive preparations for corporate assistance plans and supply chain adjustments" should be presented at next Monday's meeting. The group stated that the impact of the U.S. equivalent tariffs is no less than a major disaster or war, and the governing team must quickly and seriously assess this situation to avoid continued anxiety among the public and businesses.
The purpose of the special report is to build consensus between the ruling and opposition parties, in order to jointly face the upcoming tariff impacts and seek feasible solutions for the competitive environment of Taiwan's industries.
