A woman with the surname Wang from Kaohsiung married a man with the surname Han who is of Chinese nationality. However, six months later, she began dating and married a man with the surname Zeng, who is of Taiwanese nationality. Upon learning this, Han filed a lawsuit for bigamy, and the court found Wang guilty of the crime of bigamy, sentencing her to two months in prison and ordering her to compensate Han 160,000 NTD. Wang argued that she was coerced into marrying Han, but she failed to prove her claims. The judge stated that marriage requires honesty, leading to the judgment.
In 2019, a woman from Kaohsiung married a Chinese man, but unexpectedly, just six months after the marriage, she met another Taiwanese man and ultimately got married again the following year. When the man learned that the woman returned to Taiwan, he surprisingly filed a lawsuit for bigamy against her after she married and had children with another man. After court hearings, the woman was sentenced to 2 months in prison for committing bigamy and was also ordered to pay the man 160,000 NTD for civil infringement of spousal rights.
According to the judgment, the woman met the man in 2016, and after dating for several years, they registered their marriage in April 2019 in mainland China; however, the day after the wedding, the woman returned to Taiwan. Six months after the wedding, the woman began dating another man, remarried in October of the following year, and became pregnant in 2021, giving birth to two daughters. When the man learned that the woman had married and had children with another, he angrily filed a lawsuit demanding compensation and pointed out that the woman had repeatedly asked him for money before their marriage under various pretenses, accepting a bride price and luxury items during the marriage process; however, he found out about the existence of the woman with other men while applying for a residence permit to enter Taiwan.
The woman argued that she met the man in Taipei, and that the man used a false name, claiming to be a company manager stationed in Taiwan, and she only discovered the identity issue during the registration. However, after investigation, the judge found that the woman had applied twice for the man to come to Taiwan for family reunification after getting married and failed to prove that her marriage relationship was not consensual, making it difficult to substantiate her claims. The judge stated that marriage is a relationship formed by both parties, and the parties should mutually uphold honesty and maintain the rights and obligations they are meant to have. Therefore, the woman was convicted of bigamy and sentenced to 2 months in prison, and it was also ruled that she and the second man must pay 160,000 NTD to the plaintiff.
