Myanmar recently experienced a strong earthquake measuring 7.7 that has caused severe damage in multiple regions. Survivors are left with nowhere to hide from the high temperatures and are in urgent need of water and food. Reports indicate that nearly 20 million people are facing a humanitarian crisis, with 3.5 million displaced individuals urgently requiring assistance. World Vision has launched an emergency response to provide essential living supplies such as food, clean water supplies, and hygiene kits, while also focusing on the safety of children to prevent risks of violence and trafficking. World Vision calls on the public to help by donating to assist disaster victims in overcoming this crisis.

Surviving disaster victims dare not stay indoors, but endure the scorching temperatures of up to 40 degrees outside. Although temporary shelters have been set up for shade, they still need more adequate shelter to reduce the risk of vector-borne diseases due to water and food shortages.

According to a report from the United Nations, the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28 affected regions including Shwebo, Magway, Naypyidaw, Mandalay, northeastern Shan State, and Bago. As the death toll continues to rise, Mandalay International Airport has temporarily closed, and communication difficulties have arisen due to internet and power outages.

The disaster assessment team from World Vision Myanmar found that many houses have been shattered, leaving only rubble. The president of the organization stated that besides searching for survivors, those who remain face an urgent survival crisis.

Through rescue work communications, the organization announced on March 29: “We have never seen such a large-scale earthquake! We are currently preparing to provide the most urgent needs of survivors, including water, food, and shelter.” Myanmar is the fifth-largest country in the world needing humanitarian aid, and this earthquake has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation, with nearly 20 million people in need of assistance, including over 3.5 million displaced persons. The epicenter region of Shwebo alone houses about 1.3 million internally displaced persons, accounting for one-third of the country's displaced population.

• Emergency food assistance: We will work with the World Food Programme and local partners to provide essential living supplies such as rice, cooking oil, legumes, and salt to affected communities to alleviate hunger among disaster victims.

• Clean water resources and sanitation: As many disaster victims are afraid to stay indoors and are exposed to high temperatures outside during the day, they urgently need water and food. Water can help survivors lower their body temperature, reducing the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and heat exhaustion.

• Sanitation kits and relief supplies: The damage to public services and facilities has led to issues regarding privacy and environmental pollution for toilet needs; sanitation kits and basic living items will be distributed.

• Safety of disaster victims and child protection: Provide shelters to protect homeless families, reducing the risk of sun exposure and lowering the chances of mosquito bites and vector-borne diseases.

Additionally, considering that some disaster victims have fled the disaster area out of fear of aftershocks, we will contact displaced families and provide child protection kits to prevent children from facing the risks of abuse or trafficking in a resource-limited environment.

This disaster is a significant test for rescue efforts, but the organization has experience responding to major disasters and has been active in Myanmar for 30 years since 2008, having dealt with disasters caused by severe cyclones and typhoons.

As disaster victims face urgent living needs, the organization has launched an assistance project and is calling for everyone to contribute donations to support the victims. They are cooperating with convenience stores to provide various donation methods and emphasize that all assistance operates independently, aiming to save lives as much as possible.
