To provide a friendly waterfront environment, New Taipei City has set up fourteen barrier-free elevators to facilitate public access to riverside parks. Since 2024, the responsible agency has begun replacing the steel cables of the old elevators, and currently, the replacement of eight elevators has been completed, with a total length exceeding that of Taipei 101. The New Taipei City Riverbank Department stated that due to flood prevention requirements, there is a flood wall between the riverside park and the urban area, which affects the convenience of public access to green spaces. Since 2013, the city government has installed friendly waterfront elevators in several densely populated areas. The elevators are maintained monthly by professional contractors and undergo annual inspections, with the re-inspection of all waterfront elevators completed in October 2024 to ensure safety in use. The Riverbank Department emphasizes that the condition of the elevator steel cables is crucial; any abnormalities found will lead to immediate replacement to ensure safe operation. Currently, the steel cable replacement for eight elevators has been completed.
In order to provide a friendly hydrophilic environment, the New Taipei City Government's High Shore Engineering Management Office has set up fourteen friendly elevators leading to the waterfront, facilitating barrier-free access for the public to riverside parks. Since 2023, the High Shore Office has been gradually updating the steel cables of elevators that were identified as having safety concerns or being outdated, having already completed the replacement of steel cables for eight elevators, totaling one thousand three hundred sixty meters, which is equivalent to a height exceeding that of two Taipei 101 buildings.
The director of the New Taipei City High Shore Office stated that since riverside parks are located in river areas, there are high flood walls or levees due to flood control needs between the parks and urban areas. Compared to neighborhood parks in the city, it is relatively difficult for the public to access riverside green spaces. Therefore, starting in 2013, the city government's team has gradually added fourteen friendly waterfront elevators in densely populated areas such as Zhonghe, Sanchong, Yonghe, Sanxia, Xinzhuang, and Banqiao, enabling those in need to access riverside parks barrier-free and participate in recreational activities.
These elevators comprise complex electronic and mechanical components, and the friendly elevators at New Taipei Riverside Park undergo regular monthly maintenance by professional elevator manufacturers, with annual safety inspections conducted by specialized agencies. In October 2023, the High Shore Office also commissioned a third-party to conduct a comprehensive re-inspection of all waterfront elevators to ensure that they not only extend their lifespan but also guarantee user safety.
The High Shore Office points out that the flexibility, load-bearing capacity, and usage condition of the elevator steel cables are crucial. If maintenance contractors find any deformation, breakage, rust, or twisting of the steel cables, they must quickly arrange for the replacement of new steel cables to ensure the safe operation of the elevators. Additionally, apart from the replacement of steel cables during the inspection process, the High Shore Office has proactively conducted comprehensive updates of steel cables for older elevators, having completed the steel cable updates for eight elevators, including Yonghe Baoan, Emerald, Boai, Sanxia Mayuan Stream, Banqiao Crescent, Sanchong Tong'an, Longmen, and Changyuan elevators.
