A South Korean exchange student was stabbed in the back by a stranger with a knife this morning (5) in Ximending, prompting an urgent call to the police and a trip to the hospital for treatment. The student, who goes by the surname Shin, posted on social media that he was in Ximending for a friend's birthday party and was preparing to take the bus back to his dormitory when he was unexpectedly attacked by a stranger at 6:17 AM. There had been no prior conflict between the two, and he did not know the attacker. Shin recalled that the assailant suddenly approached him from behind and stabbed him in the back with a curved knife. When he inquired about the attacker’s intentions, the assailant fled the scene in a car. Shin immediately called the police and went to the hospital for examination and stitches. He noted that the suspect has since been arrested by the police, and he is currently recovering. He expressed that he did not want the incident to cause trouble for local businesses, but finds it hard to believe that a random stabbing occurred in Ximending, a place frequented by nearly all South Koreans visiting Taiwan.
The police stated that they received a report of a man wielding a machete attacking someone on Kunming Street in Wanhua District, and they promptly dispatched officers to handle the situation. They quickly identified the suspect and tracked the getaway vehicle. Upon investigation, it was found that a 39-year-old man surnamed Zhou had a verbal dispute with an international student on the street. Zhou then returned to his vehicle, retrieved a machete, and assaulted the student before fleeing the scene in a compact car. After reviewing surveillance footage to locate the vehicle, the police stopped the car at the intersection of Linsen North Road and Minquan East Road at 6:54 AM. They discovered that Zhou reeked of alcohol, and after a breathalyzer test, his blood alcohol level was measured at 0.95 mg/L. The entire case is being referred to the relevant prosecutorial authorities for investigation on charges of attempted murder and public endangerment. The Wanhua Precinct urges the public that if they encounter disputes or conflicts while out, they should not respond with violence but instead report to the police for assistance; conflicts should be resolved through proper channels.
