The U.S. President recently announced a 32% reciprocal tariff on Taiwan, which has garnered significant domestic attention and could impact the economy and people's livelihoods. Local governments should respond proactively. Hsieh Kuo-liang stated that the central government should develop response plans in areas such as international trade discussions, industrial chain planning, and stabilizing the stock market, and communicate early to maintain social stability and industrial confidence.
Hsieh Kuo-liang pointed out that the Keelung City Government will take responsibility and has requested the Industrial Development Bureau to immediately compile the challenges faced by the city's industries, including order outflows, rising costs, and tariff barriers, as well as assess the impact of price fluctuations on citizens' lives.
He emphasized that under the current international political and economic situation, the city government will spare no effort to maintain industry stability and sustainable development. In the future, the city government will assist local industries in facing challenges from three aspects, including establishing communication platforms, timely assessing industrial risks, and strengthening cooperation with domestic and foreign manufacturers.
Hsieh Kuo-liang has invited representatives of manufacturers from the Dawulun and Liudu Industrial Zones and will hold an "Industry Joint Forum" next week to gather industry opinions and propose specific policy recommendations, while also integrating resources from both central and local governments for rapid response and stabilization of the industry.
For export-oriented industries affected by tariffs, such as information and communication technology, electronics, and manufacturing, the city government will conduct risk classification and demand surveys, which will become an important basis for future policy formulation and resource allocation. Some manufacturers in Keelung with operations in places like Vietnam and Thailand will also be impacted. The city government will work through the Industrial Development Bureau, in conjunction with central ministries and legislators, to monitor corporate operations and labor rights, and reflect issues in a timely manner to jointly seek countermeasures.
He emphasized that the city government will continue to monitor international circumstances and collaborate closely with legislators, striving to ensure the steady development of local industries in Keelung and to safeguard citizens' livelihoods.
