Yesterday afternoon, the electric little train in the Yilan Green Expo Park allegedly malfunctioned, losing its brakes and crashing into a 78-year-old couple with the surname You. The husband, also named You, succumbed to his injuries after being sent to the hospital, while the wife suffered a broken arm and is currently undergoing treatment. This morning, the deceased's family went to the Green Expo to hold a memorial and demanded that the Yilan County Government take responsibility. County officials arrived at the scene to apologize, promising not to shirk responsibility and emphasizing that they would review all facilities. Preliminary investigations indicate that the little train lost its braking function on a gentle slope, and the cause of the incident is still under investigation.
Yesterday afternoon, an electric amusement train in the Yilan Green Expo Park reportedly experienced brake failure, resulting in the collision of a 78-year-old couple with the train. The man, surnamed You, had no signs of life before being sent to the hospital and was later pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts. His wife suffered a broken arm and is currently receiving treatment. This morning, the family of the deceased went to the Expo to conduct a soul-calling ceremony, demanding that the county government take responsibility, and staff from the Yilan County Government were also present to express their apologies.
Looking back at the incident, the Yilan Green Expo Park has two small trains responsible for transporting visitors between the entrance and the Environmental Education Center. At the time of the accident, the train was empty and was turning back to the entrance. It reportedly failed to brake, and staff hurriedly attempted to evacuate nearby visitors; however, the You couple was struck due to their delayed reaction. The train then tipped over, trapping the man beneath it. Bystanders worked together to lift the train in an attempt to rescue him, but were unable to save his life, while his wife suffered a broken left arm and is still undergoing treatment. Yesterday, the family strongly criticized the county government, questioning why it failed to ensure the safety of the amusement facilities, demanding accountability, and expressing concerns about the lack of a separation design for pedestrians and vehicles within the park that led to the tragedy.
Today, the head of the agricultural department of the Yilan County Government and representatives from other relevant agencies accompanied the family throughout the soul-calling ceremony. The director expressed deep apologies to the family and stated his regrets for the entire society. After the incident, staff were dispatched to assist with medical treatment and subsequent matters, and the cause of the accident is still under further investigation by the prosecution. The county government will not shirk its responsibilities. The Expo is currently temporarily closed and is undergoing a comprehensive inspection of all facilities. Regarding the cause of the accident, the person in charge stated that the driver's account and the on-site investigation indicated that the small train experienced brake failure on the gentle slope in front of the waiting station. Although the driver engaged the hand brake, it was ineffective in stopping the train.
In response to criticism regarding the park's lack of a "separation of pedestrians and vehicles," the person in charge pointed out that the section from the main entrance to the waiting station is not a vehicle passage, but a walking path. However, a separation design for pedestrians and vehicles is implemented only after the waiting station. Staff also remind visitors to walk within the inner side of the brick path; however, the accident occurred precisely at the point where the small train, after departing from the waiting station, failed to brake and directly crashed into the entrance.
