In Kaohsiung City, an ambulance was stolen by a 41-year-old woman outside the emergency room. At that time, the paramedics had rushed a patient into the hospital without turning off the engine due to the urgency of the situation. The woman quickly got into the vehicle and drove away. The police arrested her at Kaohsiung Port using a tracking system. The incident has drawn the attention of the fire department, which stated that this is the first occurrence of such an event in Kaohsiung. In the future, they will strengthen relevant training to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

A rescue ambulance belonging to the Xinxing squad in Kaohsiung City was transporting a dialysis patient to the emergency room of a hospital in Zuoying District this morning. Due to the urgent situation, the driver did not have time to remove the keys, and less than 30 seconds after leaving the vehicle, it was targeted by a woman who was lying in wait. She quickly entered the driver’s seat, drove away from the scene, and traveled over 10 kilometers through Zuoying District. The police intercepted the woman in Kaohsiung Port using a positioning system and brought her back for investigation on charges of theft and obstructing public affairs. The incident led the fire chief to state that this might be the first case in Kaohsiung where an ambulance was driven away from outside the emergency room.

When the ambulance arrived at the emergency room entrance with the patient, the situation was urgent, and the rear door could not even be closed. The paramedics immediately pushed the patient into the emergency room. Within less than 30 seconds, the ambulance was targeted by a woman who quickly sat in the driver’s seat and drove away. After receiving the report, the police immediately launched a pursuit operation, ultimately recovering the vehicle and the suspect in the Kaohsiung Port area. The incident occurred around 11 a.m., when the paramedics, needing to quickly deliver the urgent dialysis patient, left the engine running while entering the hospital. Unexpectedly, a 41-year-old woman with the surname Tsai had already been lying in wait in the vicinity. After getting out of a taxi, she initially entered a private ambulance and then transferred to this ambulance belonging to the Xinxing squad.

The chief of the Boai Road Police Station of the Zuoying Police Department stated that after receiving the report, they immediately reviewed surveillance footage and found that the vehicle was heading south along an important thoroughfare in Zuoying. However, the reason for the woman Tsai driving the ambulance is still unknown. The suspect was finally located and apprehended by the police around 11:50 a.m. in the Gushan District. During this incident, the paramedics also went to the police station to assist in the investigation. The deputy chief of the Kaohsiung City Fire Department's First Disaster Rescue Team mentioned that paramedics usually follow SOP procedures; although there was a minor oversight due to the urgency of the patient’s condition this time, they will strengthen education and training in the future.

A brand-new ambulance and its equipment are worth up to 5 million TWD. Fortunately, the vehicle was successfully recovered without any losses incurred. The fire department sees this experience as a lesson to further enhance training for personnel to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
