Recently, a 73-year-old American tourist accidentally brought a firearm through airport security in both the United States and Japan while traveling to Japan for sightseeing. It wasn't until he was about to board a cruise that he reported to the staff that he was carrying a gun. Subsequently, police arrested him and found three bullets in a trash can he had discarded. Authorities are currently investigating this security oversight incident.

Recently, there was a security oversight incident at an airport in Japan. A 73-year-old American traveler entered Japan carrying luggage that contained firearms, having surprisingly passed through airport security checks in both the U.S. and Japan. The traveler only admitted to carrying a firearm when he was about to board a cruise ship the following day.

Currently, the traveler has been arrested by Japanese police, and based on his confession, the police found the discarded firearm and ammunition. The Osaka customs, responsible for checking the traveler’s entry, stated that the case is still under investigation, so they cannot comment further.

According to reports, the incident occurred on March 22. The 73-year-old American traveler departed from Honolulu Airport in Hawaii and successfully passed through security at Kansai Airport in Japan. However, he only realized he had "accidentally" brought his self-defense firearm to Japan when he arrived at the hotel and unpacked his luggage.

Police in Hyogo Prefecture noted that the traveler voluntarily explained the situation regarding the firearms to cruise staff when preparing to board the cruise ship in Kobe on the 23rd. Police later arrived to inspect and found a revolver in his suitcase, leading to his arrest under relevant laws. Additionally, based on the traveler’s testimony, they found three rounds of ammunition in a trash bin at the dock.

Regarding his handling of the situation, the traveler explained that he was concerned that if he was found carrying both the handgun and the ammunition at the same time, he might face more serious charges, which is why he chose to act as he did. In response to police questioning, he stated that due to language barriers, he was worried about misunderstandings with hotel staff, which is why he delayed informing them until boarding.

After a preliminary investigation, Japanese police believe that the handgun was checked through customs at both the Hawaiian and Kansai airports while in the suitcase. Even Honolulu International Airport indicated that although the traveler's destination is a country where firearms are prohibited, as long as the firearm is properly packaged when passing through customs, they will not take any action at departure. The Osaka customs responsible for baggage security at Kansai Airport also stated that due to the ongoing investigation, they cannot comment further.
