Gongguan Roundabout has been a hotspot for traffic accidents in Taipei City for seven consecutive years. Mayor Chiang Wan-an has decided to demolish the roundabout to improve driving safety and fill in the underpass. Recently, while traveling in Portugal, Deputy Mayor Lee Si-chuan observed the usage of roundabouts and was impressed by the local drivers' yielding and slowing down behavior. He mentioned that the cobblestone streets and decorative ribbons on bridges in Portugal are also inspiring for the design of Taipei City. Due to severe violations at Gongguan Roundabout, nearby residents have long called for its demolition, and Chiang Wan-an finalized the decision at the end of March.

The Gongguan Circle has been the top hotspot for traffic accident incidents in Taipei City for seven consecutive years. The Mayor of Taipei stated that despite the challenges of the demolition project, they have decided to overcome these challenges to provide a safe road environment for the public by dismantling the circular intersection and filling in the underpass.

As a convergence point of seven branching roads, Gongguan Circle has always been a busy traffic area. To reduce the incidence of traffic accidents, the Mayor has already decided to carry out the demolition work. In addition, the Vice Mayor recently paid special attention to the use of local roundabouts during his trip to Portugal, noting that the local drivers' yielding and slowing down in roundabouts left a strong impression on him.

Many new shops and commuters from Shuanghe pass through Gongguan Circle every day. The circle has an overpass on top and an underpass below, and many riders who are unfamiliar with the road conditions often violate traffic rules by not following the two-stage left turn regulations. On average, nearly 5,000 riders receive penalties each year, and nearby residents believe that the circle acts as a large obstacle, with the question of its existence having been debated for a long time. The Mayor decided on a demolition plan at the end of March.

The Vice Mayor shared on social media that before he set off for his trip to Portugal, the city government had already decided to demolish Gongguan Circle. During the trip, he specifically observed how local roundabouts were used and noted that drivers were able to yield and slow down within the roundabouts, which impressed him. Additionally, he noticed that Portugal has many unique cobblestone roads where construction teams use stones of different colors to create distinctive local patterns; this thoughtful design is very beautiful and worth emulating.

He mentioned that lovers have locked many love locks on the Rainbow Bridge in Songshan, Taipei, but due to the weight of the locks, it may affect the bridge's load-bearing capacity. During this trip, he discovered that the bridges in Portugal are decorated with ribbons, creating another beautiful sight without causing pressure; such an approach is also worth considering by the city government.
