Disney's live-action adaptation of "白雪公主" has recently been released, starring Golden Globe winner 瑞秋曾格勒, but it has performed poorly at the box office, with expected losses of up to $100 million to $200 million. As a result, Disney has decided to halt the preparations for "魔髮奇緣," even though the film had already hired a director and a screenwriter. Disney still plans to release other live-action works, such as "星際寶貝" and "海洋奇緣," but specific evaluations remain to be seen.
Recently, the Disney animated adaptation live-action film "Snow White," starring Golden Globe-winning actress Rachel Zegler, was released. However, it has performed poorly at the global box office and faced negative reviews, with expected losses of $100 to $200 million. Therefore, despite Disney's preparations for the upcoming live-action "Tangled," which is set to begin filming this summer, there are reports that Disney has paused the development of the "Tangled" live-action adaptation.
"Tangled" is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Rapunzel," and an animated version was released in 2010. It is reported that Disney originally intended for the film to be directed by "The Greatest Showman" director Michael Gracey, with plans to start official filming in the summer of 2025.
Reports indicate that following the release of "Snow White" and its poor box office performance, Disney has developed concerns about the box office confidence for future live-action adaptations, leading to the decision to temporarily halt the project. It is unclear if this cancellation is permanent, a temporary pause, or a reconsideration of creative direction. Some sources suggest that this may be related to concerns from the unconventional casting choices in "The Little Mermaid" and "Snow White."
Before "Tangled" was put on hold, it had already been confirmed that Michael Gracey would direct, with the script written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, co-writer of "Thor: Love and Thunder" and director of "Someone Great." The casting for the lead role of "Princess Rapunzel" had considered actresses such as Florence Pugh and Sabina Carpenter, but a formal list has yet to be released.
After the announcement of the halt on "Tangled," Disney still plans to release two other live-action films, "Lilo & Stitch" and "Moana," during this and next summer, and their reception remains to be seen.
