A newly appointed assistant professor at the medical school was deported to Lebanon last month for "openly acknowledging" support for a Hamas leader and personally attending their funeral. Several foreign students involved in pro-Palestine protests were also arrested and deported.

Columbia University became the first affected prestigious institution, with the Trump administration retracting $400 million in federal funds that had initially been earmarked and threatening to withhold more funding if the safety environment for Jewish students did not improve. Columbia University agreed last month to meet the federal government's demands by significantly modifying campus regulations, imposing severe penalties on actions detrimental to Jewish faculty and students, and reviewing its Middle Eastern studies department.

The Trump administration has pushed right-wing conservative policies, extending even to issues concerning transgender individuals. The University of Pennsylvania lost $175 million in federal funding for allowing transgender athletes to compete in swimming events. Princeton University stated on the 1st that federal grants for dozens of research projects have been halted.

Last month, the federal anti-Semitism task force announced that investigations into campus anti-Semitic protests at certain universities are still ongoing, and based on the results of these investigations, $9 billion in federal grants and contract payments could be frozen. On the 3rd, the Trump administration sent a letter to the president of that university outlining a series of demands, including a ban on masking on campus and a clear campus speech policy, stating that if the institution complies, their "financial relationship" can continue to be maintained.
