However, she sparked controversy by sharing a photo of a Chinese crepe on social media. Hsiao Bi-khim explained that the photo was taken a week prior and apologized for the misunderstanding it caused. She emphasized that the government will prepare to negotiate with the United States and review the international procurement model for energy and raw materials to address the issue of trade deficits and enhance Taiwan's competitiveness.

Recently, U.S. President 川普 announced reciprocal tariffs, leading to fluctuations in the international situation and an increase of 32% in tax burdens for Taiwan. The government has shown a high level of attention and response. However, 蕭美琴, who previously served as Taiwan's representative to the United States, shared a photo of a wrap on social media Threads, which resulted in dissatisfaction among netizens. 蕭美琴 stated today (April 5) that the photo was taken a week ago and she did not notice the timing of its release in relation to international circumstances, leading to misunderstandings. She expressed her sincere apologies.

蕭美琴 emphasized that the government has been actively preparing for the next phase of negotiations with the U.S. and will adjust the current international procurement model for energy and raw materials to respond to the current situation. At the opening ceremony of the "保生 Cultural Festival," she mentioned that the wrap photo received attention and criticism due to coinciding with the Qingming Festival; she said that the photo was originally set to be released on Qingming Festival and did not take into special consideration the subsequent timing and changes in international circumstances. This misunderstanding caused confusion, so she again expressed her apologies, hoping that everyone could refocus on facing the current challenges together.

蕭美琴 pointed out that the new tariff calculation model announced by the U.S. is based on the trade deficits of various countries with the U.S. Last year, Taiwan ranked seventh among all countries with trade deficits against the U.S., amounting to more than 70 billion USD, which is higher than the significant trade partners such as Japan and South Korea. The announcement of these tariffs will have a non-negligible impact on Taiwan, and the government's position is to minimize this impact.

She stated that the government's response will focus on two aspects: first, to prepare actively for the next phase of negotiations with the U.S. to strive for fair treatment for Taiwan. In this regard, the Executive Yuan has already made preparations. Second, concerning the issue of trade deficits, over the medium and long term, it is necessary to review and adjust international procurement models for energy and raw materials, while assisting industries in global positioning to enhance the upgrading of domestic industries and global competitiveness, overcoming the current challenges.

蕭美琴 stressed that as long as competitiveness is enhanced, making local industries irreplaceable, Taiwan can transform amidst the current storm into a prosperous and stable nation.
