U.S. President Trump recently announced a new tariff policy, imposing tariffs of up to 32% on certain products from Taiwan. Former Taoyuan City Councilor Wang Haoyu criticized this move as a devastating blow to Taiwan's textile industry, describing it as a "death sentence." He pointed out that due to high tax burdens, China is unable to sell textiles to the U.S. and may redirect these products to the Taiwanese market, further squeezing the survival space for local businesses. In response to this situation, the Executive Yuan held a press conference, announcing an 88 billion NTD support plan to assist affected industries and society in facing the challenges.

The President of the United States recently announced the latest tariff policy, impacting global trade, particularly imposing tariffs as high as 32% on certain products from Taiwan. A former Taoyuan City councilor stated that this move is undoubtedly a "death sentence" for Taiwan's textile industry. He pointed out on social media that the U.S. is imposing a high tariff of 50% on small parcels exported from China, making Chinese textiles difficult to enter the U.S. market. These unsold products are likely to shift to Taiwan, seriously impacting the local textile industry. He warned that if the Taiwanese market is flooded with low-priced Chinese products, it will further squeeze the survival space for local manufacturers, potentially triggering a more severe industrial crisis.

He further pointed out that Trump's new tariff policy will directly impact cross-border e-commerce from mainland China to the U.S., including well-known platforms. The high tariffs make it difficult for these businesses to sell their products to the U.S., and to avoid losses, they will have to clear their inventories in large quantities. In this scenario, a substantial amount of Chinese-made textiles such as clothing, socks, and towels may turn to the Taiwanese market. If Chinese e-commerce platforms offer promotions like "free shipping to Taiwan," it will make the survival environment for local textiles even more challenging. This development essentially brings a "death sentence" to Taiwan's textile industry.

Today (the 4th), the Executive Yuan held a press conference to announce response plans to the U.S. tariffs. The government will promote nine major aspects and 20 specific measures to assist affected industries and various sectors of society in facing challenges. The total budget for this plan reaches 88 billion NT dollars, with the industrial sector receiving 70 billion NT dollars in support, while agriculture will receive 18 billion NT dollars in subsidies. The Executive Yuan stated that these measures include providing financing and loan incentives, additional subsidies, and tax reductions. Furthermore, the government will assist companies in enhancing their export capabilities, expanding into international markets, and strengthening the global competitiveness of industries. Special focus will be given to small and medium-sized enterprises and traditional industries, with corresponding support plans developed to mitigate the tariff impact.
